@LanceMcAlister Pretty sure I recall them paying Wes $1.4M in his first year or something like that. Everything costs more in the B12. Glad the university (and donors) stepped up to do this. Cannot remember a hire like this in Cincy sports (pro or college) with this much consensus on the hire.

Per UC: Calhoun’s deal is a six-year contract, pending board approval. It will pay him $3.7 million in the first year with an annual raise of $100,000.

@Matt_DuMont_ Agreed, he was THE choice. Great hire. But suppose he comes and wins playing finesse offense and defense is just OK. The “Bearcat Basketball” purists might say that’s not our brand. Personally I’m excited to have an offensive-minded coach. (Ironically Brannen was good at that…)

It feels like UC finally got the clear and obvious choice to lead the basketball program. He hasn’t just seen what UC basketball is about from afar, he’s lived it. He knows exactly what it takes.

@XUCoachPitino Good luck, Coach. UC fan here wishing you success. When both teams are Top 25 it’s great for the city and the Shootout goes to another level. In the meantime, congrats on your dad’s run, rooting for him. Great story. Maybe the best to ever do it.

Experiencing the tournament thru a fans perspective is something every head coach should do. Amazing experience for fans, boosters, alumni. It brings everyone together. Can’t wait for Xavier fans to be a part of it next year! ⚔️

@tony_pike15 In Bengals terms…. would be like Mike and Katie and Troy all retiring, replaced by the best and most talented people available, who immediately fire Duke Tobin and replace him with an elite scouting staff. So … good, very good.

@SylasW85554 @tony_pike15 “Established brand name coaches” don’t leave their jobs to go to UC. Who exactly do you have in mind? They’re not getting Jay Wright out of retirement. In football they could’ve had Curt Cignetti but passed. UC has to place its bet on an up and coming coach. That’s how it works.

@tony_pike15 No surprise… hope he is the right man for the job. Don’t know why UCincy can’t hire an established brand name coach. Utah State’s schedule and conference is nothing like playing in the Big 12. More suffering in Cincy for a while with a learning curve for a new coach.

@tony_pike15 Most exciting hire in last 50 years of Bearcat Basketball. Huggs did not arrive w/big fanfare. People didn’t even want Mick, they wanted Andy. Everyone wanted Calhoun. Have we ever hired a guy coming in like this? Two straight tourneys, beat a BE team and almost upset AZ….? HR.

@autyelmore Has there ever been more excitement 4 a hire? Huggins/‘89 - came from Akron & media laughed when he said F4. Mick/‘06 - people wanted Andy Kennedy. Brannen/‘19 -lukewarm excitement. Wes/‘21 - no one heard of him, many wanted Erik Martin. Entire fan base wanted Calhoun. HR.

I’m not going to pretend like I knew a bunch about Jerrod Calhoun prior to the last couple of weeks…but based on the reaction I’ve see thus far, the guy is being met with sky high expectations. This is a major moment for UC athletics. I hope he wins and fixes the program. If he doesn’t, where then does the blame go?

-Got the best coach available -Going to get all of his players on top of who he decides to keep here -AND he has little incentive to leave due to his history with the school. To think we were less than two minutes away from another year of Wes miller

@Williams_Justin @MoEgger @TheAthletic How different this time was from when we were glued to your coverage five years ago… 2021 - fans never heard of Wes, many wanted Erik Martin 2026 - No search; alum coach coming off 2 NCAA appearances who almost upset AZ & who entire fan base wanted. Gr8 they got it done.

Headline on Cincinnati MBB hiring Jerrod Calhoun. It's a homecoming for Calhoun, a Bearcats alum & former Bob Huggins assistant. That alone is appealing, but Calhoun earned the opportunity with the job he did at Utah State. Free to read via @TheAthletic. nytimes.com/athletic/71371…

Cincinnati MBB is expected to hire Utah State's Jerrod Calhoun as the new head coach of the #Bearcats, sources confirm to @TheAthletic. Calhoun, a Cincinnati alum & student assistant under Bob Huggins, was the front-runner the moment the job opened. @MattNorlander first here.

@tsnmike Keeping players in college is gr8. Portal made sense - why let schools block better situation elsewhere? - but portal/NIL combo leading 2 new rosters every year hurts fan interest. Do u think multi-year NIL contracts 2 keep players from jumping every yr will become more common?

@CAustinCox Kenyon Martin isn’t just for the biggest loss for Cincy fans. It’s the biggest loss entering the tournament in the history of college basketball. He was the consensus National Player of the Year, and even after the injury, the #1 pick in the draft.

For Texas Tech, it has to be JT Toppin. For myself as a fan, it was Cincinnati losing Kenyon Martin against Saint Louis. What's the worst (most impactful to the season's outcome) injury that your program has ever faced going into March Madness?

@LanceMcAlister @MiamiOH_BBall I’ve lived in Chicago for 30 years. Had tickets the night of “The Kenyon Martin game.” Was sick with 103 fever. Still considered going but couldn’t get out of bed. Gave the tickets to my brother in law. The rest is history. Still watch it once a year, at least…..

I have a friend who attended Tuesday night's WBC championship game and last night's @MiamiOH_BBall game. He said they are two nights he will never forget. It got me thinking about our 8pm topic. "I Was There / Wish I Were There" moments. Give me the best in game/performance you have experienced in person.......AND........give me a game/performance you wish you had experienced from the past.

@TheFireMaan @ljw21 I would go 2 and 3 since Pratt gets # 1 for the INT to seal the 2021 win to break the drought….. But he was a great Bengal. Period.

Spending the morning watching old Bengal highlights. Logan Wilson @ljw21 made so many big clutch plays. Arguably the two biggest defensive plays in Bengals playoff history. Divisional round late INT vs the Titans Causing the fumble on the Sam Hubbard 99 years TD return vs the Ravens. He was one hell of a player!

@ChrisLongKSTP When the crowd argues that Miami didn’t play anyone and the P5 schools have a much tougher schedule, they conveniently omit those P5 schools also have 10x the resources, all the big tv money from their conferences etc….. Never seems to come up.

Seriously. They let 68 teams into this thing. If you go *undefeated* in a regular season - even against mid-major or lesser competition - and you're still on the bubble? What are we doing? Wouldn't we rather see 31-0 Miami get a go than a 7th place ACC or 10th place SEC team?
Front Office Sports@FOS

Miami (Ohio) went a historic 31-0 in the regular season and was still a bubble team for March Madness. After leading the RedHawks to their first NCAA tournament game this century, head coach Travis Steele said: “We more than belong.”

@DocStripes Wish him well but total wasted 3R draft pick. The same level pick they hold up FA signings to make sure they get more of. How about less risky picks and then operate like a normal team in FA? But MB always loves a bargain. Burfict. Cedric Benson. Chris Henry. Pac-Man. Burton.
