Those white flashes are caused by light reflected off Earth, called “Earth-shine.” When Earth moves into the instrument's view, sunlight bouncing off the planet can overwhelm/saturate its sensor, creating a bright white flash.
This happens more often during “eclipse season,” around the equinoxes, when Earth lines up with the satellite and can even eclipse its solar instruments.

The Compact Coronagraph (#CCOR1) on @NOAA's #GOES19 🛰️ tracked #Comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) over the weekend. According to @NWSSWPC, "The comet does not appear to have survived its close approach to the sun and likely disintegrated into dust and gas after getting as close as about 100,000 miles from the solar surface."
