@Shooshan5 If we keep playing games whose rules are written by top-10 programs to benefit top-10 programs then we’re going to lose. Step one? Stop fetishizing top-5 journals; reward papers based on citations, not masthead; commit to hiring the best new Ph.D.s from mid-ranked programs.

This article hit very close to my heart. I have felt the gulf between the top 10 & rest of econ widen throughout my career & see no end in sight. I am also acutely aware of rising publication fees, shrinking dept. budgets, and rising data costs (e.g. recent CMS data changes). 1/2

My piece in @TheAtlantic today: Break Up Big Econ The economics profession has become insular and status-obsessed, and not focused enough on making a positive impact on the world. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

At the risk of exposing how big of a nerd I am, I was so pumped to have met THE @ChrisPerkinsDnD on my flight today! Big thanks for the photo, will always love that 4e adventure with the robot chicken crew.

I read or listened to 60+ books in 2023. Top 3: Small Things Like These, Foster, & Nimona. Runners up: Career & Family, Africa Is Not A Country, Bandit Queens, and Underground Railroad. Also: I may have overindulged in detective fiction.

While prepping my JMP slides, I've made some pretty cool updates to my latex slides template: - color rows/cells (with reveal options) - bottom left beamer buttons: \bottomleft{} - customize theme colors(!) - full-size figures: \imageframe{} github.com/kylebutts/late…

Updating some of the exercises for my class “Data Science for Business Applications”. If you have/know of cool (clean) data that can be used for causal inference and/or prediction, let me know! (It’s undergrad level, and topics can be broad).

@arthur_spirling the threat of “We’ll just check your twitter profile if you don’t have a website” would actually induce some people to get websites

@btshapir @asacarny I think these types of questions can be very helpful if they are in service of further fleshing out/isolating the mechanism.

I find the "what if you did X?" type of questions during conference talks to be super unhelpful. Presumably we could all go read the paper and make up our own minds about whether the result is robust and even privately offer other robustness checks to the authors.
