What are the left-coded dude hobbies and obsessions? I can think of a million right-coded ones––weed and DMT and UFC and weightlifting and comedy and nutrition and weird supplements and paranormal shit––but what are the equivalents on the left?

@Ankaman616 1. Hojlund gets the golden boot including a hat-trick in the group stage 2. England plays Germany but the main talking point is Nagelsmann's suit v Gareth's cardigan 3. Frimpong outshines Mbappe in the group stage game between them

Hello friends, EURO 2024 begins this week, so let's do another Bad Predictions Amnesty. Tell me your baseless, nagging football musings. Something you think will happen over the tournament. You get a re-do at the end of the group stages. We'll look over these before the Final.

When I first started out all I wanted to do was get #Birmingham in the big magazines. I’m really proud of my seven-page feature on Birmingham and its indie bars, restaurants and venues in the latest issue of National Geographic Traveller. Out now! 🐂 nationalgeographic.com/travel/article…

@jameskhansen The scary thing is that those pages are so cleverly engineered through memetic tactics to look relatable/create a meta community but were always designed to be monetised and become brands in their own right

@thuli94 yes, i think you're right. i'm interested in how the volume / exposure is interacting with the way the same platforms create volumes of hype that become damaging (e.g. that columbia road christmas thing that had to shut down because of marauding tiktokers)

@jameskhansen reminds me of that Chris Morris quote on modern satire. "You do nice dissection of the way things are … and you get slapped on the back by the orthodox elite (east London hipsters)."

the memes observing homogenous cultural phenomena are fun. the irony of monetising them to the point that they become powerful homogenous cultural phenomena themselves? well it's potent but i think it's also quite bad

@DanQayyum @HashUrTag r u dumb bro? Sri Lankan cuisine is one of the most labour-intensive. Dishes like lamprais are complex and perfecting hoppers is no easy feat. Also you have about 5 or 6 curries with rice and string hoppers and they all have a different flavour profile to create a balanced plate

@HashUrTag Mate ask them their entire cuisine is about 12 dishes, it's like they just can't be arsed. They eat to live not live to eat like we do in Pak ♥️

It's not just the lack of notable dishes in their own cuisine (curry, of which we have hundreds, is just one dish here, mild variations by region but same gravy and chicken), it's the general disinterest they have for food or flavour. Most of the stuff served in restaurants is stale and has been sitting in a display window the entire day. 90% of the food here is cold, stale breads. Most restaurants have menus without a single local dish, and with Chinese or Western dishes instead. Any chicken used in most dishes is pre-fried and chewy, added to the dish at the end and served at room temperature while nobody seems to mind. I saw a guy selling corn on the cob on the roadside. They were boiled. No butter, masala or even salt 🤦 The most highly recommended dish was string hoppers (Pictured). How can anyone be excited about this? For a country that has so much natural beauty, a very decent tourism infrastructure and warm, super friendly people, you'd expect SOME local fare which would excite tourists but nah. Never seen a people so dispassionate about food.

Although not in those words, but when Shaykh Taha Karaan visited me in Dubai in 2012, he had come over straight from Sri Lanka. He told me how the food was his least fav experience in Sri Lanka and that he was yearning for good old desi food!
