I like the idea of being able to play a variety of teams at our skill level instead of the same 3-4 teams.
I don't like how youth sports tournaments price gouge worse than airports.

@VicVijayakumar An option to reset is a move to manager track 1-3 yrs. If you like it, great. Now have a new path, skills to learn, interesting projects. If you don't, you can find a "demotion" at your old role level and probably not as bad a hit since mngr skills are appealing in engr roles.

Tangentially- another misguided expectation from the zirp era that a ton of people have is that their inflated titles would continue carrying them through their careers. People became senior engineers after 1 year in seat, got promoted to staff after 2 years, and used those title bumps to change jobs when standards were much lower.
After getting laid off, they're finding out now that they can't actually pass interviews at those levels, not to mention that the market is flooded with a billion other "staff engineers" all applying for the same job.
Wasn't their fault, but the fall back to reality still hurts.

Most people aren't staying at their jobs because they're happy. They're staying because the alternative is worse. During the ZIRP era, you could spell javascript and earn yourself an offer elsewhere with a 20% salary increase. Now these days? You're competing against the largest pool of active, qualified candidates in your career. Interview processes are longer, more intense, and that's assuming you even hear back. Most people are sending hundreds of applications just to get a single call. To many folks currently employed, it's simply not worth it to see what else is out there.

@efino87 My wife (then fiance) and I made the choice in 2004 when we graduated from UNL to move where one of us found a job first in the Midwest, preferably KC or Omaha (that's where family was). KC won out, just more opportunities. That was a while ago, but I'm happy with the choice.

@efino87 Omaha October surprise snowstorm, dad and I went out to try and clear a path on the road leaving our neighborhood and a tree trunk a couple feet around dropped in the space exactly in between us. We both thought the other got hit. Moved it and went home after that.
