@WelchRobII โ€œBoth the ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ South and the Arab lands were hierarchical societies, convinced that they had achieved the highest level of civilization. Their deeply held ideologies of white supremacy & Islamic superiority demanded the subjugation of blacks in the former and Jews in the latter.โ€

I have a new piece on AI and medicine, and a big overshare. Last year, a doctor misdiagnosed me and put me on medication which had effects worse than anything I've experienced in my entire life. ChatGPT is the only reason I've been able to come off the medicine safely.

A scientist, artist, founder, writer, engineer, clinician, trader, or researcher does not need a synthetic philosopher-manager deciding whether they are in sufficiently โ€œalignedโ€ with their โ€œbetter self.โ€ They need a system that can meet them at their level of the work. #๐Ÿ›‘ EAโ€™s!

@fidjissimo So now regular chat and creativity are just a distraction for ChatGPT? I see...

Companies go through phases of exploration and phases of refocus; both are critical. But when new bets start to work, like we're seeing now with Codex, it's very important to double down on them and avoid distractions. Really glad we're seizing this moment.

@FirasHermez @fidjissimo Well said, and just completely baffling that she seems to be describing general knowledge work as a โ€œdistractionโ€ โ€” no clue what OpenAi is doing with this.

@fidjissimo Does that mean we are getting updates to Codex so it can perform general knowledge work & not just coding?

Apple selling cheap laptops means itโ€™s giving up on being an aspirational brand. Means itโ€™s run out of ideas - which has been obvious for a while with the goggles and the thicker phones and iPads. Itโ€™s like if Mercedes entered the compact truck market.

@fidjissimo Can you spell out what you mean by โ€œdistractionsโ€ because if that means serving the 80% of non coder uses including more than what seems to be your โ€œpinterestโ€ images w/ celeb injections carousel limited UX that hampers pro researchers usage of OpenAi/ChatGPT perhaps rethink this

building a traditional browser for LLMs is such a red herring. if you market yourself as a โ€œbrowserโ€ replacement, you already failed because power users (your first users) have expectations from browsers you wonโ€™t ever meet & normies will never switch & dgaf. if youโ€™re curious go to the arc subreddit & read about all of the complaints. one way to think about changing the browser paradigm is by layering in browser type functionality slowly into desktop & mobile app (a la chatgpt app)โ€”chatgpt did this with search, how many times will users simply go to the app to search instead of google? itโ€™ll happen slowly, but over time users will prefer to use it for more & more use cases as it becomes powerful. it will never feel like a traditional web browser or be called one. itโ€™ll be much more of a companion app, an entirely new category. letโ€™s think about a simple consumer example: - imagine a use case like booking flights, agentic behaviors (as we squeeze out more from models) should mask this out entirely even in the short term, in fact the website ux is already absolutely atrocious to use. why would we want to invest in rendering old ux thatโ€™s horrendous? no website should be allowed to build their own tragic ux. that stuff should be entirely in the background. you could either re-render that ux using an LLM in a entirely different & masked context or again sidestep it entirely. there are numerous other consumer โ€œwork flowsโ€ when thought of one by one in first principles reduce down to a better ux than a browser but very much not pure chat either. somewhere in between & consistent across the entire web. itโ€™ll be interesting to see how this evolves over time. letโ€™s face it, the web is siloโ€™ed, most people spend their time on very few websites. the browser itself is sort already useless & will become more that way over time as we have alternative experiences.

@BackInBlackBear There is a massive difference between a vetted PhD researcher on an H-1B visa in San Francisco and the unvetted, third-party data-labeling churn in mainland China.
