@JeffDean @NewYorker Apparently, the article is paywalled, BUT firstly the entire article is visible for a fraction of second, before its hidden by a message prompting for a signup, pay. I did cmd+A in that short window and got the entire article pasted on google docs. pls consider fixing the bug

Performance Hints Over the years, my colleague Sanjay Ghemawat and I have done a fair bit of diving into performance tuning of various pieces of code. We wrote an internal Performance Hints document a couple of years ago as a way of identifying some general principles and we've recently published a version of it externally. We'd love any feedback you might have! Read the full doc at: abseil.io/fast/hints.html

Everything has been said about this by now but truly it’s so nice to have my relationship dynamic represented on screen. This is how people who will die minutes apart talk to each other. Beautiful.

@maithra_raghu @prfsanjeevarora Yes google did had LaMBDA, and @mustafasuleyman fought for it to be released and apparently some people in power thought it might compete with the core business model. And that was the(probably the main) reason why he left google to start Inflection AI.

Google did have LaMDA by 2021, which was pretty close to ChatGPT, maybe worse in conversational skill but much much better in terms of web retrieval, etc. It was *magical* testing it internally. But it was such a dramatic step forwards that there was confusion on what to do with it. (This was also largely unfolding in Google Brain, not Deepmind)

I don't think Google had a chatGPT equivalent in late 2022. (But I agree that if they would have had one, they would probably not have released it.)
Jared Duker Lichtman@jdlichtman

Without taking a stance on him personally, Sam Altman @sama is the individual most responsible for the current dynamics in the AI industry landscape: It's defining feature is iterative deployment of increasingly capable models, across all frontier labs. Before the ChatGPT moment, Google Deepmind had the strongest models internally, but Demis Hassabis @demishassabis had been reluctant to release to the public (per @scmallaby Mallaby’s recent biography), for fear of societal impacts and race dynamics. History will judge whether iterative deployment will be better for society absorbing technological change gradually, or exposing downside risk.

Not long ago i used to be the youngest in most rooms, at many things. Now at a MBA college when 25 year olds call me sir, the thing that hits me most is damn, where did my youth go, life is short, even if nothing crazy happens...

The team really killed it on photorealism with this model. While testing we found out ice is a great barometer for this - try this glacier prompt. A glacier wall towering like a cathedral interior, deep blue ice with light refracting through layers, tiny human figure at base for scale, cinematic, cold mist in air, hyper-real detail

Been awesome to have MAI-Image-2 out in the world and see people's creations. Wanted to start sharing some favorite prompts the team has come up with so you can test them out for yourself 👀 Will keep adding to this (and share yours too)
