Excited to release our study on the emergence of new promoters in random vs genomic DNA. Posting the thread on the other place :) biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Final countdown to submit your abstract for #SMBE2025! If your work bridges synthetic biology and evolutionary theory, we’d love to see it in our symposium. Don’t miss out—apply today!
Xueying Li@3Xueying

@H_hydrochaeris @Cauawest and I are organizing a symposium themed “Synthetic approaches to evolutionary theory: a dialog between the past and the future” at #SMBE2025. Abstract submission deadline is in 10 days!

It looks like I never posted anything (*but see below) on what are probably the most surprising results my lab obtained so far. Anyway, this work—led by an outstanding former PhD student Sarah Ardell in collaboration with @_miloj—is now published: science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

So glad to see this out! It was definitely a labor of love, but it has become my new blueprint of how I think about AMR evolution. We aimed to highlight how much we've learnt as a field, and especially, how much we still *don't* know 1/4

Thrilled to see the first review article from my lab out in advance @AnnualReviews, helmed by @Celia_Sqe: From Petri Dishes to Patients to Populations: Scales and Evolutionary Mechanisms Driving Antibiotic Resistance annualreviews.org/content/journa…

Anyone know an example of de-novo gene birth from POINT MUTATIONS (not duplications, transposons, fusions), where the gene's activity is also validated experimentally? I only find lists of de-novo genes from bioinformatic screens, or examples from the aformentioned mechanisms...

Fun fact: did you know that ~10% of random DNA sequences have promoter activity? Much more fun to see it directly under a microscope!

@biorxiv_micrbio From the paper they cite doi.org/10.1093/jac/dk… "The results indicate that sertraline may be useful as a model efflux pump inhibitor for in vitro short-term experiments in E. coli, but is unlikely to be clinically useful as a co-drug against Gram-negative bacteria."
