@TA_hifi would you recommend the @MonitorAudio AMS 6G Dolby Atmos speakers for use with a Criterion TL Series and @MarantzOfficial Cinema 50 based 5.1 setup to create a 5.1.2 setup? Appreciate your help.

Outside a senior care home in Düsseldorf, Germany, there’s a bus stop with a green and yellow sign, a bench, and a printed timetable on the post. It looks exactly like every other bus stop in the city. No bus has ever stopped there. The home built it around 2006, with the help of the local transit authority. The residents have dementia. Many of them, when the confusion gets bad, become certain they need to go home, even though the home they’re remembering is one they left decades ago. They’d walk out the front door looking for a way back. Sometimes they made it onto real buses. One woman was eventually found at the address of her childhood, where strangers were now living. So the staff built a bus stop that goes nowhere. When a resident wanders out and sits down on the bench, a nurse comes over after a few minutes and says the bus is running late, and would they like to come inside for a coffee. By the time the coffee is poured, the urge to leave has usually passed. The replica was so convincing that for the first few weeks, neighbours kept showing up to wait for actual buses. The nurses had to explain. Dementia eats short-term memory first and works backwards in time. The part of the brain that holds new memories goes early, but the older memories, childhood, a first home, a young family, can stay vivid for years after. The bus stop works because it doesn’t argue with that. It meets people in the reality they’re actually living in, lets the moment pass, and brings them back inside. Versions of it now exist in care homes across Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, and the United States.

@LibertyJen @apple autocorrect doesn’t even bother with the main word, the one you are using and just gives you variations of it!!!!! 😠 at the end you have already typed the word and auto autocorrect or auto type did nothing to help! @tim_cook must realise this problem exists!

Kudos to @AirFranceKLM. They destroyed my wife’s suitcase (stuff happens), so we trudged to the service desk. I was hoping for some duct tape and expected to fill out a form where, maybe, they’d send me twenty bucks in six weeks or so. Nope! The friendly and efficient clerk apologized for the damage, measured our suitcase, went into the back room, and returned with a brand-new suitcase, the same size, still in the shrink wrap. We swapped the contents right there and rolled out of baggage claim with the new suitcase. Nicely done. That’s the sort of service I’d expect from Singapore Air, not a European carrier. (By the way, what happened to @SamsoniteUSA? Apparently they’re no longer gorilla-proof…)

I was on a train in Tokyo. We stopped between stations. Announcement in Japanese, then in English: "We apologize for the delay. We will resume shortly." The delay was maybe 3 minutes. Not a big deal. When the train started moving again, another announcement: "We sincerely apologize for the delay. We were stopped for 3 minutes and 20 seconds. This is unacceptable. Thank you for your patience." Three minutes and twenty seconds. They measured it exactly. And called it unacceptable. When I got off at my stop, there were station staff on the platform bowing and handing out delay certificates. I took one out of curiosity. It was an official document stating that the train had been delayed by 3 minutes and 20 seconds, signed and stamped. The staff member said in English "for your employer. So they know the delay was not your fault." I said I'm a tourist, I don't need it. He looked confused. "But the delay affected you. You deserve an apology." Three minutes. They were treating a three-minute delay like a major incident. Later I mentioned this to a Japanese friend. They said "oh yes, delay certificates are normal. Trains are supposed to be exactly on time. If they are late, they must apologize." I said three minutes isn't late, it's nothing. My friend said "in Japan, three minutes is late. On time means on time. Not approximately on time." They said the train company probably investigated why there was a 3-minute delay. "They will find the cause and fix it so it doesn't happen again." I kept the certificate. It's framed in my apartment now. A reminder that somewhere in the world, people care about three minutes. © 6IX.
