This is Asuka’s breaking point. After everything she witnessed and learned through human instrumentality she understands what needs to be done, what both her and Shinji need. Rei says anyone can return to human form as long as they recognize themselves as “I”, Asuka and Shinji won’t be alone forever. Asuka could never show true vulnerability, always hiding it behind her insecurity and fear of being replaced/rejected (like her mother, or like with the doll) but now she reaches out and gives Shinji that one small genuine intimate touch, the first time she’s let the mask slip and been sincere. That alone is enough to break Shinji, and from this point on they can move forward, facing forward to begin healing together.
