Report: Trump Considering Sending Thousands of Additional Troops to the Middle East, Some for Ground Missions U.S. President Donald Trump is considering deploying thousands of American troops to the Middle East, some of whom may be tasked with securing tankers in the Strait of Hormuz using air and naval forces. According to Reuters, citing U.S. officials and other informed sources, securing the strait could also involve deploying forces along Iran’s coastline. The Trump administration is also discussing options to send ground forces to Kharg Island, known as Iran’s main oil export hub. In addition, officials said the administration has considered deploying U.S. troops to secure Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles. A White House official stated that no decision has been made to send ground forces at this stage, but that President Trump is keeping all options on the table.
