You are correct that Gaethje is a gatekeeper now. And it is make sense that Paddy given an "easy" fight against Gaethje based on historical fight. But the result will more likely underwhelm most expectation.

Being SPAMMED with “where’s the UFC pick” LMFAO, relax niggaz. Gaethje is basically the lightweight division gatekeeper, filtering elite from "just" good. I'm not a big fan of Paddy - I don't think he's been tested at the level he portrays himself to be. That being said, Gaethje is a solid matchup [and I would've picked Gaethje to win if this was a few years back]. But Paddy is only getting better and more or less in his prime, Meanwhile Gaethje has likely lost most of his motivation to continue fighting [talks of retirement and enjoys golfing more than anything else]. Even if Gaethje comes in with his "known gameplan" of chopping leg kicks, Paddy will be able to avoid most of it and mix it up with dominant grappling. ~ Dr. Axius.
