Crypto has changed a lot since we wrote WAGMI at the end of tweets last cycle. It used to be for the regular guy as well, and you could even make a decent amount of money without certain skills and edges as long as you believed in something.
Now, it's much harder. The game gets tougher every year, and the best players get better and better, taking more and more of the money. I don't know which exact moment I felt it for the first time, but sometime in 2023, I could feel the landscape was different than what I was used to.
Because of the horrendous down-only market in 2022, many projects delayed their token launches to 2023. And in 2023 exchanges started listing them more and more often. Sometime during 2023, we had 2-3 semi-big tokens launching every week. And with more supply than ever, but with a low demand there was little hope for these tokens to survive.
Today, in 2025 the total unlock of crypto altcoins every month is approx. $5B, a number that will continue to increase due to the constant launch of new tokens.
The traditional buy-and-HODL strategy, which once proved effective over periods of in earlier cycles, is largely obsolete. Holding periods have compressed dramatically, shrinking to mere weeks, sometimes even days (remember how OGs told us to just buy altcoins low and hold to sell at the top?)
The focus is shifting away from the idea of "investing" in altcoins for the long haul and towards a more tactical approach of "trading" them.
The goal is to avoid becoming the last believer in a failing project, holding on as its value dwindles to zero.
So what can you do? To succeed, you need a mix of natural ability, hard work, and good luck.
You can get good at it, but it takes years of practice, and you'll probably lose money until then. The people who are already good at it have a big advantage that's hard to catch up to. Sometimes new players can do well in new areas, like with certain types of coins that become popular quickly.
But over time, these areas become more competitive and tricky, and new players often don't know how to handle the changes. Remember how the memecoin arena used to be fun, and something that you had at least a small chance of doubling your money? Now it's just rigged by insiders, and the span went from months, think $WIF, to days ( $PNUT), to now hours or minutes ( $LIBRA + Portnoy shitcoins).
All of this is making people less confident in crypto, and tbh I can't blame them. This leads to shorter cycles of excitement and more cynical behavior, which makes it even harder to succeed.
In 2021, people generally felt confident in buying dips in their preferred altcoins, provided they weren't invested in projects with very low mcaps. The prevailing belief was that these coins would eventually recover, at least for the duration of that particular cycle. The coins that gained traction early on tended to maintain their strength and relevance until the cycle's conclusion. Well, today we don't even know if we are following the 4-year cycle anymore.
For every winner, there must be a loser. The casino in 2025 is far harder to navigate than in previous cycles, with too many concurrent poker tables (i.e., different altcoins and sectors) and a proliferation of new tokens launched daily, each vying for attention and capital.
The abundance of choice makes it harder to identify and capitalize on genuine opportunities, increasing the risk of being caught in a failing project.
However, some people still remain optimistic about an altseason like we had in 2021, and I really hope they will be right because my bags need a comeback for sure.
