And the athlete does not need a psychologist on the field ,, they need a coach who can shape a world that makes them better..

@JoelCressman The art is not in having a perfect system. The art is in reading the organism in front of u,your team adapting your system 2help it grow. That is the tru act of controlled improvisation. U are not abandoning your principles, u are finding a more creative way 2 instill them.

I have a coaching problem I’ve never encountered: Low engagement.  My team gets into tight games and melts. We bus home and the chat group is silent.   The talent is there.  We hang with more experienced teams.  But after a close loss, The response at practice is: “You need to punish us more.”  They want errors to result in push-ups.  It’s how they’ve been trained to think before they reached my team.  This goes against every fiber of my being as a coach.  But it is the unique make up of this group.  I’ve been listening to Phil Jackson’s “Eleven Rings” during the season.  And I was struck by one line: “Coaching is an act of controlled improvisation.”  I have a clear philosophy. We use Principles of Play to guide development.  However, each group is different.  I can lead them in a systematic direction.  Yet I need to adapt to the group in front of me.  My act of “controlled improvisation” is to Hear the need for external motivation, While pushing them to seek more for themselves and the group.  It may not be best practice, But it is responsive to this group.  For other coaches out there, I ask you: What act of “controlled improvisation” does your team need?

I despise this sort of stuff. All Arteta is saying here is that he’s open-minded in searching for marginal gains which may have an impact, however small, in helping Arsenal to win. Scepticism is such an easy thing to indulge in but it’s a dead end.
