Africans are poor because too many African countries make it hard to start businesses, get permits, access reliable electricity, trade freely, protect property, enforce contracts, attract investment, and keep the rewards of hard work.
Singapore is richer than Britain, its former colonizer.
Switzerland, which never built a colonial empire, is richer than Spain and Portugal, two of the greatest imperial powers in history.

I've not seen a single person answer this accurately.
The answer is 'risk management'.
It was not necessarily to claim new empirical footprint, but to nullify the risk that military peers might.
Additional lands held two strategic purposes:
1. Military outposts
2. Resource supply
Indigenous persons were a minor and frustrating consideration. They were not the (or a major) threat, however localised skirmish (inevitable) then forced global agendas to be localised.
The suppression/ oppression of indigenous, whilst brutal at the individual level on occasion, has been undoubtedly of great benefit to such persons.

Hungary's 2026 state budget expenditure is ~43,781 billion HUF, so this is **~0.05% or less**. Relative to GDP (~100+ trillion HUF nominal), it's under 0.03%.
It's a symbolic gesture for moderation/humility more than a meaningful budget fix. Real savings would come from broader spending reviews.
