@mrbgilson The thing that I’ve found to help upper elementary kids with this concept is comparing it to a fortune in a fortune cookie- something universal that can be applied to different situations. Explaining the theme in the context of the text is crucial.

I am trying to help my students better understand the theme and wonder how folks teach it. I see some that teach it as a one-work thing or maybe a couple of words, while others are more about a sentence or statement. Is there any type of consensus?

@DanGutmanBooks @AmeDyckman I teach second grade and put a lot of my math in the context of cookies. 216-127… “if I have 6 cookies, can I eat seven? Nope. Have to open another pack (unbundle).” Works for understanding equal parts when starting fractions too. Everyone wants a fair share of a cookie.
