John Nash painted many landscapes around Dorset in the interwar years. He rarely attempted to paint directly from nature, preferring to work in the constant light of his studio from the sketches and watercolours made on the spot. 'Walled Garden, Bredy,' was painted in 1923.

In the summer of 1888, John Singer Sargent and his family moved to Calcot Mill near the River Kinnett in the English country of Berkshire. This work bears all the hallmarks of swift painting, there's a freshness in the slightly skewed composition and the brio of the brushwork.
