I suspect this will be unpopular, but if we want to allow religion in the public square, we should do so consistently. Praying outside an abortion clinic, following @ArchbishopSarah on her pilgrimage to Canterbury or observing sunset prayers in Trafalgar Square - all should be treated as peaceful and lawful acts. Celebrating special occasions in Trafalgar Square is, in fact, a deeply British thing to do. We should be isolating the jihadi extremists, not vindicating their claim that Islam and Western democracy are incompatible.

"But energy prices are set in world markets"... This lazy argument against using the UK's own oil and gas reserves has been debunked many times, but here are some key points... 🧵 1️⃣ this claim might be true of oil, but not of natural gas (which is much cheaper in the US)...

All the likes of Britain, Ireland, Denmark and Germany need to do is to follow the Spanish model of installing large amounts of solar generation and having twice as many hours of sunshine per year as they currently do.
Jeremy Cliffe@JeremyCliffe

Meanwhile, Spain's massive investment in renewables is paying dividends now: with prices for Spanish industry and consumers low and stable compared with other European economies. ft.com/content/ac7791…

So while the Nazis were working on a secret scheme to trigger hyperinflation by flooding Britain with debased bank notes, Nationalist China was spending over a tenth of its aid money on doing the same to itself. No wonder Mao won.
Peter Race@CoKeynesian

During WW2, 9% of the material flown over "The Hump" from India into China was Yuan banknotes, ordered by the Bank of China and printed in the US and UK. China was printing vast amounts of money to fund the war, leading to hyperinflation.

Architects are lobbying the Govt to require that builders employ an architect to submit a planning application ('protection of function'). Remember: builders won't have to *listen* to these architects. They just need to pay an architect to sign off their application. Protection of function is *completely toothless* for enforcing higher design standards. This is in fact *pure rent-seeking* by the sector, a medieval-style tithe on building. There is nothing to recommend this proposal, and the Govt should toss it out without another thought. architectsjournal.co.uk/news/arb-in-ta…

Granted I was only 13 in 2014, but as far as I recall the idea that ‘only native British people should be able to hold public office’ was not in fact considered ‘innately sensible’.
Leo Kearse - see me on tour! Links in bio@LeoKearse

@Con_Tomlinson "extreme far-right" just means "has opinions that would've been considered innately sensible up until about 2014".

How dangerous was overland trade in late medieval/early modern Europe? Not particularly, judging by insurance rates. Unlike marine insurance, where premiums regularly exceeded 10%, it typically cost just 2-3% for long-distance overland trips - and usually wasn't even insured.

Apparently the House of Lords Science & Technology Committee thinks the average UK pension saver would be upset to learn that their pension was invested in the S&P 500 (92.95% growth since 2021) instead of working for Britain in the FTSE 250 (23.27%).
