The Pikemen on the N25 were lit up today to mark the battle of Vinegar Hill 1798. Love #Wexford - they know and remember their history.

The RIC commemoration controversy also highlights the l significant disconnect that exists between much of the media and many people in Ireland. Fintan O'Toole thinks we should grow up for not commemorating gunmen who sought to suppress the democratic will of the Irish people.

A centenary I hope is well marked this year is the munitions strike, the refusal of dockers and railwaymen to handle weaponry or to transport those who sought to destroy the Republic. It was one of Irish labour's greatest contributions to period, well captured by Ken Loach.

We’ve had more pro-RIC opinions out of @IrishTimes journalists these past few days, than we’ve had pro-unity opinion pieces out of the IT over the course of Brexit. Let that sink in.

He may not be as revered in Irish history as Michael Fassbender’s RIC great-grandfather, but if anyone still wishes to visit Dublin Castle on the 17th January to pay their respects to figures from the country’s past, perhaps they might check out its room honouring James Connolly.
