Everyone often asks why South Carolina is a red state but doesn’t act like it. The reason is systemic… and obvious.
SC has one of the most powerful legislative branches and one of the weakest executive branches in the country. This is the opposite of Florida which is less conservative but still more productive.
Giving the highest authority to people most susceptible to lobbying and interest groups is not productive. Giving the highest authority to people who debate and talk all day is not productive. Giving the highest authority to multiple different people divided on ideology instead of one unified office voted by the entire state is not productive.
We can’t be surprised that nothing gets done when the slowest and most inefficient part of government has most of the power and authority in this state.
The Governor’s powers must be expanded regardless of which individual is elected because the legislature has proven we can’t count on them to take care of our roads, schools, congressional districts, budget, infrastructure, our growing population, and picking competent judges.
Other states don’t have to put up with this and neither should we. South Carolina deserves a government that works for the people and not the other way around.
