Today I am recognizing A.L. Lewis, successful businessman who grew up in east Jacksonville. Lewis is best known for establishing the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, which was Florida's only million dollar business in 1937. Lewis also helped to establish American Beach.

Today, I am highlighting Oakland Park in east Jacksonville, which was the first park officially opened for African-American children in 1918. Humanitarian Eartha M. M. White was very instrumental in getting this one-acre park opened. I love learning about the history of Jax!
