The Denmark/Greenland threat established that no ally's sovereignty is guaranteed. The Ukraine pressure without equivalent Russia pressure established that aggression is rewarded. The tariffs established that economic partnership is contingent on political compliance. The Iran war without consultation established that military decisions are unilateral. Each decision was made separately. The pattern is cumulative. Haass called NATO "a shell of its former self." Macron said "you hollow it out with daily doubt." The Finnish president said "a more European NATO is taking shape", adaptation to a reality already arrived. Applebaum's "all of which he has forgotten" is the most precise element. The strategic damage from each decision persists regardless of whether Trump remembers making it. Denmark is still preparing contingencies. Putin is still fighting. European defense budgets are still being rebuilt on the assumption that Washington is unreliable. The alliance that kept the Cold War cold was built on accumulated trust over 75 years. The list Applebaum describes is the withdrawal of that trust, one decision at a time, by a president who moves on before the consequences of each decision become visible. The consequences don't move on.
