Having watched Rupert Lowe’s recent interview with Carl on Lotus Eaters, I’m glad to see him doing more engagement with the online right. However, I came away with some dissatisfaction that I’d like to see addressed in future sit-downs. Judging by early YouTube comments, I’m not alone. Towards the 2nd half (or at least the final third), Carl asked Rupert how we get our messaging out to those who don’t currently align with us particularly Greens who are there on economic grounds and general future anxiety. Yet at least three times, Rupert continued rattling off accurate but somewhat disjointed points, moving from one topic to the next. I can imagine Rupert’s perspective: he wanted to use the airtime to drive membership and traffic to the branches by covering all the valid ground. In a first interview that might make sense. But this was a follow-up, not an initial sit-down. Many of us listening are already convinced likely 70% or more of the audience are active members. The real opportunity was to focus on Carl’s questions, answer them plainly, and invite discourse. That would have sold Restore Britain even better by showing we’re serious about listening and bringing different parts of our fractured electorate to the table. It particularly grated in the final third because Carl never quite got a answer. In my view, there are two key linchpins we need for any General Election Success: First, mobilising more women with the help of groups like the Pink Ladies headed by Orla. This would give us far more women activists for Restore, helping counter the establishment’s lazy “right-wing thugs” branding. Second, winning over not just hard Reform sympathisers but also moderate Greens on economic policy which was the exact base of Carl’s question. Without these, we won’t differentiate ourselves enough from Reform, To claim the centre-ground “common sense” vote, or pull in the large numbers of people who’ve sat out elections for years. Thinking generously, Rupert may simply be less familiar with this media format and will sharpen up with time. It could also be that he was holding back detail ahead of upcoming policy papers. Either way, it would speak volumes if he leaned more into listening to voices like Carl’s. Since he has been deep in online discourse for a decade and has a strong read on the temperature among those under 40 accross the political spectrum. None of this is meant as negative criticism of Rupert/Restore. I saw the backlash to the recent incident with Sas and how some wouldn’t accept anything short of total line-toeing. A bit of healthy internal debate is natural. But if we’re serious about winning in the next few years we need to get good at effectively: 'That could have been better, acknowledge it, fix it and batter on.' At the end of the day, this is our one shot to Restore Britain. We have to keep each other right. Whereas our allies in the Trump Administration, who want to revert to their domestic agenda, have told the Times, “It looks like Farage has gone mainstream whereas Rupert is the real deal.” Nevertheless, the success of both Reform and Restore at last week's local elections show that the Blairite centrist consensus is dead, and the public are willing to vote for the most patriotic party representing their people's interests on offer.
