#TekanaUrishingiweMuhinziMworozi : Farming Without Protection Is a Risky Life. Back in the 2000s, as Rwanda was rebuilding, many citizens didn’t understand why they needed health insurance. When asked, most would say: “Why should I pay every year? What am I paying for? When will I ever get sick? That is how community-based health insurance (Mutuelle) began its journey. It was met with resistance, doubt, and misunderstanding. But as years passed, people started to see the light: - it reduced preventable deaths. - it made healthcare accessible to the poor. - it showed every citizen that their life matters. Today, Mutuelle is one of Rwanda’s greatest success stories, embraced by almost every household. And many who once rejected it have become strong witnesses to its importance after facing an illness they couldn’t afford to treat without insurance. Today, agriculture and livestock are entering their own historic moment Rwanda is a nation of farmers. Yet every year, crops get destroyed, livestock die, and farmers incur heavy losses often losing everything they depend on. There are many silent struggles: - A farmer whose entire field was washed away by floods. - A livestock keeper who lost his cattle due to a sudden outbreak. - A family whose crops dried up from prolonged drought. These losses push families into poverty, destroy progress, and leave farmers vulnerable. But why should a farmer continue working without insurance, when his entire livelihood depends on unpredictable conditions? It’s simply our history: just like Mutuelle, agricultural insurance is new and still misunderstood by many. But those who have tried it are now the strongest testimonies of its value. "#TekanaUrishingiweMuhinziMworozi” Farmer Protection, Farmer Confidence. The @RwandaGov recognized the challenges farmers face and introduced a strong support system: - Selecting key crops and livestock essential to national food security, including: - Maize, Soybean, Rice, cassava, Irish potatoes, Beans and french beans. - Fish And livestock: cattle, pigs, sheep, poultry and Fish.. - Covering 40% of the insurance premium, so farmers don’t carry the full burden. This means the government pays nearly half of the insurance cost, enabling farmers to think about future security, instead of focusing only on today’s losses. Under this program, when crops are damaged by disasters, drought, pests, or livestock suffers from accidents or approved diseases, the farmer receives compensation to recover and continue farming without starting from zero. A modern farmer doesn’t gamble with fate: he protects his livelihood Here are reasons every farmer should insure their farming activities: - Drought or floods don’t give warnings but you can be prepared. - Your harvest feeds your family for the whole year : it shouldn’t depend on luck. - Insurance is what separates a farmer who collapses after losses from a farmer who keeps growing. - With compensation, no farming season is ever a total loss. Rwandan Farmers Are in a New Era of Opportunity Just as health insurance once looked useless but became the backbone of healthcare in Rwanda, agricultural and livestock insurance is becoming the backbone of resilient farming. Farmers who embrace it today will be the ones to testify tomorrow: “I survived because of my insurance. It protected me.” To all my fellow farmers: Your harvest is your wealth. And wealth is not protected by hope; it is protected by insurance. Tekana Urishingiwe Muhinzi Mworozi gives you peace, security, and the strength to farm confidently like a true professional. Be protected today, and stand stronger tomorrow. #TekanaUrishingiweMuhinziMworozi
