I've finished my latest newspaper/data project! "When's the big day?": The days and times of Catholic wedding masses, 1871-1960 I looked at over 3,000 articles across 30 American Catholic newspapers to tabulate what day of the week and time of day people had their wedding masses. Link below!

In November 1973, Father Andrew Greeley and William McCready issued an apocalyptic report on the ever-deepening Mass attendance decline: "Have the changes of the Vatican Council weakened the faith of the Catholic people? . . . Do they find the new liturgy senseless?”

The decline continued into the early 1970s. Various commentary, incl. by sociologists, newspapers, and diocesan officials, remarked on the decline and pinned most of it to "the changes which have been made in the liturgy since 1964" x.com/HandMissals/st…

In 1971, for example, the assistant chancellor of the Diocese of Cleveland discussed the reality that Mass attendance had declined 11% since 1966 and he explicitly tied the liturgical reforms to this decline:

In a report to the national federation of diocesan liturgical commissions, sociologist William McCready (who worked with and co-published with Father Andrew Greeley) said: "…we can see that the year by year decline in Mass attendance starts to gather steam around 1967-1968.”

There was a noticeable decline in Mass attendance between even 1964 and 1966, and when asked in at least one national survey the laity themselves said the "New Liturgy" was at least part of the reason

Yes. I touched upon this in my "New Mass of 1964" series, as many of you know. It was quite difficult to hunt down a variety of contemporary sources and surveys, but they do exist and speak to this reality.

Interesting. Mass attendance rates fell more sharply in the years *before and during* Vatican II than in the decades after the council's implementation (the immediate decade after VII was the steepest tho)

@1SharonKabel @HandMissals @M_P_Hazell Yes I have long thought of both as trailblazers there. I was recently asked to review a book that examines through sources how the reforms of the council were received in Baltimore which also cuts against the narrative. Not all revisionism is bad, much is necessary

I grabbed the OCR when I could and when it was clean, to make translating and reading a bit easier. The descriptions of the beatification, and Pope Pius X's reception of those on pilgrimage, are (unsurprisingly) moving. sharonkabel.com/1906-beatifica…

In anticipation of the feast of the Carmelite Martyrs of Compiegne tomorrow, I'm posting my annual round-up of posts and articles I've written on the subject. My latest post is a small collection of news clippings and ephemera about the Carmelites' beatification in 1906.
