Deputy Health Minister Sleiman Kwidini told striking nurses that the government cannot afford to pay the salaries they are demanding, saying their hard work can only truly be rewarded by God. Speaking during International Nurses Day celebrations at The Avenues Clinic, Kwidini gave an emotional speech in front of nurses, hospital leaders, students, and government officials. He admitted that many nurses in Zimbabwe are frustrated and unhappy, but warned that the government does not have enough money to meet demands for salaries of up to US$800 per month. “We were recently discussing the strike by nurses in public hospitals,” Kwidini said. “We asked ourselves whether anyone in the world can fully repay a nurse for the important work they do. Nurses do such valuable work that only God can truly reward them.”

It is not a secret that the geopolitical conflict in the Middle East has led to a surge in fuel prices worldwide. From Africa to Asia, America to Europe, fuel prices have hiked, and the commodity is getting more expensive day by day. Against this backdrop, our government, led by President @edmnangagwa, has decided to remove taxes levied on diesel and these include, excise duty, Zinara load levy, carbon tax, and strategic road levy. As a result, diesel now costs USD 2.11, and petrol is priced at USD 2.23, making our fuel relatively cheaper. Without the government's intervention, diesel could have been more expensive, thereby disrupting economic stability. This shows the benefits of having a government that advances the interests of the people, when push comes to shove, they compromise and adapt to cushion the people and mitigate economic shocks.
