We have spent £180m on plans for a tunnel under Stonehenge. The project is now scrapped. You can be for a tunnel & think spending is a good idea (even if you think the cost of planning is silly). You can be against a tunnel & think spending is a bad idea. But *nobody* can be for spending on this scale with zero result. And yet that is a peculiarly British outcome. Nobody will be reprimanded. Nobody will see their career affected. But that’s £180m of taxpayer money just wazzed up the wall. Totally without repercussions. Multiply this by airport expansions & train route plans and Thames crossings and power stations and other examples you can think of yourself, and… soon you’re talking serious money.

Now do the Parliament building. Then do HS2. The female humanities grads working for PWC on outsourced bat surveys, pulling in 80k pa working from home vs the hard hat fella laying pipes in all weathers for minimum wage, working for an outsourcer of an outsourcer of Carillon or Serco or somesuch. Public works as God intended.

I grew up a few miles from Hartpury College - seen it evolve from a provincial agricultural college into a sports education powerhouse. Many much maligned 'new' universities are in fact built on well established institutions which have thrived as a result of university status.

@lyndonbajohnson I suppose people are torn. Making the Nazis look foolish, silly etc is perfectly fine. You don't want people thinking that the Nazis are, "cool." Yet, might there be a danger in making Nazis appear to be dipshits etc, that we forget that this evil can be a real threat?

In the generation immediately after WWII, the Nazis were portrayed as dipshits in American popular culture. Colonel Klink getting endlessly scammed by Hogan. It was only later that the Nazi was reshaped in popular imagination as a cunning and formidable foe (a mistake). -OS

4 years ago we changed how we teach WWII -- emphasizing what a bunch of fucking dipshits the Nazis were, defeated by normies who considered the details. The Nazis sent an army into the USSR without winter coats. The US shipped 80 million gallons of Ice Cream into the Pacific. -OS

Romania answered America's call for help after 9/11 as did many other NATO members, big and small. Our soldiers were deployed there for 19 years. 27 Romanian soldiers were killed and 200 were wounded in Afghanistan. I met on of them in a hospital recently. He lost a leg to an IED and has to get treatment for the rest of his life. I have only one question for the American cousinfuckers who are now saying NATO allies are unreliable and ungrateful: How many Israeli soldiers fought and died for the US in Afghanistan?

If Zack Polanski wants to "exit the bond market doom loop", shouldn't he be calling for the UK borrow a lot less or nothing at all? His position seems to be - among other things - that we should borrow more as a country. Presumably that borrowing is from... the bond markets?

@1he0pposite @PolitlcsGlobal @BBCNews Seeing as I designed part of it when it nearly got funded 20 years ago, no. But a Ryder Cup bid is not and should not be a factor either way. I also know from direct experience that Peel Holdings are the biggest double dealing bar stewards on the planet.

@1he0pposite @PolitlcsGlobal @BBCNews Yes. This is a Peel Holdings Project, who have plenty of their own money. The golf course was rejected by Bolton Council. If you want to justify taxpayer spending, a one-off event at a luxury resort not wanted by the locals is an odd choice for a so called socialist.

Key question: what does 'not leaving Iran in control of Hormuz' practically mean? Centuries of Royal Navy ops in this area prove the centre of gravity for any form of piracy, or maritime asymmetric warfare is on land Seizing a few island alone won't do the job - you would have to seize the northern shores of the Strait AND hold it along a considerable stretch of coastline, with sufficient depth into the hinterland to deny the aerial threats This is rugged terrain, includes a major city Bandar Abbas with 700,000 inhabitants, a highly mobilized civil defence architecture that will immediately kicks into insurgency Even if you could get two brigades of 30,000 boots mobilized with the necessary naval and air support, even if you were able to seize the coastline, a deployment wouldn't be sustainable PLUS, as long as the IRGC has access to the sea, it can release skiffs, smaller platforms and most importantly USVs to disrupt freedom of navigation in the Gulf
David B Roberts@thegulfblog

So much obfuscating metaphor going on here. Literally, literally, what does stopping Iran's ability to impact Hormuz mean? Sinking every floating thing on the Gulf? Destroying all harbours? Boat yards? Controlling the coast? What? Then we can muse on the how.
