One small bit of hope: over the last decade, many very good early chapter books have been written. I’ve been reading them with my kiddo, and they are legit fun.

Reading scores, 3rd graders to 8th graders, 2015 to 2025. This is a national tragedy.

Hot take: airplanes should be required to board back to front. First people down the jetway just walk straight on all the way down the aisle, everyone sits down, must be there or you miss the flight. Would take like 4 mins for the whole plane to load.
Eli@elkelk
Never understood why boarding a flight early is a “perk” Great, I get to sit for an extra 22 minutes in an uncomfortable seat while we don’t move

@Jeremy_JFischer Tell me more.
What harness do you use? What kind of tasks do you give the agents?

This is a good reminder and I haven't seen it recently from @patio11

Oh I somehow missed my yearly exhortation: If you work in tech, you are likely underinsured on term life. You should have plural million dollars of coverage, including *outside* coverage offered by your employer. This is so cheap you will barely notice it.
English

@Jeremy_JFischer @bdefig Try it for a week. You won't go back.
English

@1stringham @bdefig "Life is too short for phone cases." 😂
English

@Jeremy_JFischer @bdefig No insurance for me. I just don't drop my phone.
English

@1stringham @bdefig Do you get phone insurance? Like AppleCare or other? I don't. So if I spend over $1000 on the thing, it's getting a helmet.
English

@Jeremy_JFischer @bdefig Stop putting your phone in a case and actually experience using them how they were designed.
Life is too short for phone cases.
I haven't used one for over a decade.
I mean, if you have broken multiple phones then probably invest in one. But I don't think everyone needs one.
English

@bdefig Lol... no. We're all putting our phones in cases anyway, Apple.
English

@1stringham You aren’t getting off easy. Why are you the way you are?
English

@1stringham I’m still here despite my lack of posting. My lurking is strong, however.

@gregwrubell How does the Big 12 determine home and visitor status for the championship game?
English

@kidehen @sundarpichai It put the correct stacking on both sides
English

@sundarpichai Very nice!
Variant in color, by simply using the original as input.
Prompt:
Create a rendition of the correct stacking, but in color.
Little Issue:
I didn't ask for both in the rendition.

@aryehazan @lacker "Finite does not mean much if you can't tell any practical difference between it and infinite."
Steven L. Peck, A Short Stay in Hell
English

@lacker that’s actually a profound and profoundly depressing take
the number of theorems graspable by the human mind might well be finite
in fact, it kind of has to be
(otoh it’s probably large enough for us to never functionally run out)
English

my aspiring mathematician nephew is concerned that maybe someday we'll run out of nontrivial theorems to prove
he knows there are infinitely many *theorems* but worries that there might only be many finitely interesting ones
I told him that all the mathematicians I know think otherwise
what argument would put him at ease?
English

@patio11 I'd love to hear how you're teaching your young children to be financially literate and to develop healthy financial habits.
English

@patio11 I have never heard of someone taking abacus lessons.
Is this unique to Japanese culture, or is it something I should consider for my children in America (who only speak English)?
English

@jlinehan9 The conference championship game is always a morning game.
