A not-so-subtle message of the James Garfield series on Netflix is that crazy people shouldn’t be able to get guns But the more direct takeaway is like President Garfield, you’re 10x more likely to die due to medical error than from an armed assassin

Watching Death by Lightning about James Garfield and his crazy story, lest no one forget...he died because of the doctors who starved him and shoved their unsanitary hands in his wound. We MENNER (Mentor) people know JAG, his story, family and his home...right near the Great Lakes Mall!

Death By Lightning on Netflix is fantastic! A wonderfully made miniseries about the assassination of President James Garfield, a president that not many people know about, but absolutely should.

#DeathByLightning Doctor Willard Bliss (1825 – 1889) was an American physician and pseudo-expert in ballistic trauma, who treated President of the United States James A. Garfield after his shooting in July 1881 until his death two and a half months later.

As someone that enjoys presidential history, I can't recommend "Death by Lightning" on Netflix enough. James Garfield's story (and the circumstances around it) deserves to be common knowledge. One of the great what-ifs in US History. Some artistic license, but pretty accurate.

Robert Todd Lincoln carried a strange shadow of history with him. Though he was not at Ford’s Theatre the night his father was shot, he rushed to the White House upon hearing the news. Later, he stood only feet away when President James Garfield was gunned down in 1881, and he arrived in Buffalo just as President William McKinley was fatally shot in 1901. These eerie coincidences earned him a reputation as a kind of grim witness to America’s darkest political tragedies. Beyond these moments, Robert’s life reflected both privilege and burden. He became a successful lawyer and served as Secretary of War under Presidents Garfield and Arthur, later leading the Pullman Company. Yet he often felt weighed down by his father’s legacy, burning many of Abraham Lincoln’s letters and struggling with the public’s expectations. His strained relationship with his mother, Mary Todd Lincoln, culminated in him having her committed to an asylum, a decision that remains controversial. Robert was the only one of Lincoln’s four sons to reach adulthood, outliving both parents and all siblings. His Vermont estate, Hildene, became a symbol of his attempt to carve out his own identity apart from the Lincoln name. When he died in 1926, he left no direct descendants of Abraham Lincoln alive, closing the family line.

As a presidential enthusiast, it's been remarkable to see James Garfield thrust into the nation's consciousness the past few years, with CW Goodyear's Pulitzer-worthy biography of the 20th President and the terrific Netflix series Death by Lightning.

My hometown was a part of James Garfield’s Congressional District. He would have been my Congressman if I were alive in the 1860s and 1870s. I would have proudly voted for him, and I’m sad for our country that we never got to see what kind of President he could have been.

@JustineBateman Yesterday I lamented a new Netflix show thinking it was about Lincoln, turns out I was dead wrong it was about the all but forgotten assassination of James Garfield. Good show and I learned.

@VTHistory25 I also called him "Georgie Porgie," but not too many people remember that.

Fun fact: future President James Garfield is credited with being the first to refer to George Thomas as the "Rock of Chickamauga" for his leadership at the battle (Garfield was the army Chief of Staff at Chickamauga)
