Retrieval practice goes wrong when it becomes a ritual for teachers to perform. The aim isn’t five questions at the start of every lesson. It’s making knowledge available when it’s needed: recalled successfully, used purposefully, corrected visibly, and strengthened for elsewhere and later. open.substack.com/pub/daviddidau…

I have returned from four weeks of the work I feel like I was born to do. Also went ice fishing, curling, snowmobiling, skating, apologized for no reason, watched a hockey game, wore flannel, and other Canadian things that I was not born to do.

I’ve been living in Canada these past few weeks. I don’t quite know how to explain how much this experience has impacted me - and it’s only half way through! Yes I dragged my family up here and they are loving it!

I am deeply saddened to share that Amanda Lathlin, the first First Nations woman elected to the Manitoba Legislature and MLA for The Pas-Kameesack, has begun her final journey. In a 2015 by-election, Amanda made history in Manitoba: though Indigenous women have been here since time immemorial, she became the first to serve in the provincial legislature. The barrier she broke helped pave the way for other Indigenous women to serve as MLA and Minister. It also contributed to my eventual election as Premier. Amanda was a one of a kind voice for the north, The Pas, and her community of Opaskwayak Cree Nation, where she’d previously served as councillor. Amanda was a great retail politician who loved to visit and laugh with her constituents. The first time I visited Trappers’ Fest in The Pas she blew me away by greeting every single person we met by their first name. Amanda was very proud of legislation she passed to provide stronger services for sexual assault survivors in the north and compassionate leave for those who miscarry. Amanda also fought for Oscar’s Place, a homeless shelter in The Pas, which was her late father’s legacy. Amanda’s dad, Oscar Lathlin, was an NDP Cabinet Minister who served in the Doer government before his passing in 2008. Amanda was proud of the Cree language. She began incorporating it into her remarks in the legislature starting when we were in Opposition. Amanda and I had a relationship like no other. I had her back through the many challenges she faced in the last few years. And she kept speaking to me in a way that few people do these days: we laughed, we argued, and sometimes she’d just tell me “awas!” Through these ups and downs she became a sister. The last time I spoke to her she made fun of me for wearing a suit to visit her in the hospital. Amanda was a devoted mother who, in the months before her passing, became a grandmother. Above all else, she loved her family deeply and devoted her life to her girls. My prayers are with Amanda’s loved ones in The Pas, Opaskwayak Cree Nation, and across Manitoba, as well as all who were touched by her leadership and friendship. Kinanaskomitin Amanda, for all you have done for Manitoba. Your girls are healthy and strong. Tell Oscar we miss him too.

@MaritStiles @CFifeKW They are also asking for him to address education funding and programming for vulnerable kids; more accessible and better quality health care and reduced wait times in both rural and urban areas…the list goes on…

Doug Ford is obsessed with Toronto  but he keeps forgetting he’s Premier of the entire province. While he’s busy drawing up plans for a fantasy island, a new convention centre, and even adding jets, people in Northern Ontario are just asking for one thing: fix a single highway.   No one in Northern Ontario asked for a luxury spa or a new island in downtown Toronto. They’re asking for safer roads - so no more lives are lost.

@Mikeggibbs We live in the cradle of the largest freshwater complex in the world. It’s staggering how we sometimes take it for granted. It is truly a special one-of-a-kind part of the planet.

Living on the Great Lakes is a huge privilege most of us take for granted. Most people who don't live on the coasts don't have easy access to a perfect horizon like we do. It's ideal for astrophotography. And it allows us to see across vast distances. We can see with our own eyes weather systems hours before they reach us. Before a major weather event, Lake Ontario fills the air with a sense of eerie foreboding. I love it. There really is no better place to live. #ONstorm

I can’t believe the day today. I found a kitten covered in ants on its last leg. I tried to clean him at work and noticed his insides coming out of his backside. Rushed him to ER vet after 3 min they said nothing we can do but put him down peacefully. I sat and my truck and lost it a bit with this crule world Then get a call tonight just before 10 saying nope kitten is still alive was passing worms. When do you want to pick him up he wil be ok!! Hello Roscoe. Reba’s new friend WTF MAN

I’m on my way to meet with transit workers right now, but I have to talk about this first.   This is bullshit. Doug Ford is changing the rules so that he and his ministers never have to answer to you. Ever.   Freedom of Information laws are how journalists, researchers, and regular people find out what the government is actually doing with your tax dollars. That's how we found out about the Greenbelt scandal. The Ontario Place spa deal. All of it. Now he wants to exempt himself, his cabinet, and their offices from those laws. Completely.    He's not trying to protect one document. He's trying to make sure you can never find out what he's hiding. An honest government doesn't do that. And we're not going to let him get away with it.

The problem every board in Ontario is facing is deep chronic underfunding by this govt. PDSB balanced our budgets and were prevented from using our reserves to help make up the $45 million deficit Doug Ford’s Education Minister gave us for spec ed. #onted #onpoli #cutshurtkids
Tina Yazdani@TinaYazdani

NEW: The Ford government takes over two more school boards, bringing the total to eight. The education minister says “both Peel & York Catholic are facing serious challenges they cannot resolve on their own.” Of note: the new supervisors have no background in education.

I got this statue of Barack Obama for my Dad a couple months before he died. He was suffering from cancer and immobile. He loved the Obamas, just the sound of Barack's voice calmed him. Dad placed it on the table in front of his face. He looked at Obama constantly in his last weeks and hours alive as his condition worsened. He said during his darkest moments at night Obama's face calmed him. So it's very special to me. It's on my bedside table. #Barack

@jillpromoli 100% The outcome of the chaos ensuing in schools due to lack of funding is that student gaps are growing and many are behind in literacy and numeracy skills. The backs of educators are being broken every day trying to make it work. No one wins.

A capacity problem since ~ 1995. Hospital bed capacity cut by ~ 30% to offset Paul Martin’s budget cuts and to fulfill the prophesy of the health care economists that we wouldn’t need all these beds. Then they forgot to factor in the ALC rate of a rapidly aging population
Jon Meddings@JMeddings

There has been a capacity problem since ~2000. Literally, almost nothing done about it despite extensive reviews and recommendations. This gov *cancelled* a new hospital, planned to handle pop growth, despite *begging* people to come to AB. /3

Gotta say I am loving my new toy. It spins in the air - it's levitating - on two extremely strong magnets. Only wish they could make it spin on an angled axis like the real Earth. But it's all a matter of perspective so it's still technically correct.
