The Writing Revolution

This is a tough one. It's exciting to see growing interest in writing instruction, but we are seeing more organizations claim connection to The Writing Revolution or the Hochman Method without any official association. The vast majority of these trainings and materials do not reflect the method with fidelity. Many are just plain wrong. That matters. When the approach is misunderstood or misapplied, students miss out on the clarity and structure that make writing instruction effective. As an educational nonprofit, we are committed to access and accuracy. We offer free, officially aligned book resources to support The Writing Revolution 2.0. We also share new featured resources each month through our website and mailing list. On Monday March 23, we will open the application period for the annual Abrahamson Scholarship that has helped thousands of teachers get training at no cost to them or their schools. We are always looking for more ways to reach more educators with the support of our donors. When people hear that The Writing Revolution encourages a structured way of teaching writing, they sometimes worry it will limit students’ creativity. In practice, we see the opposite effect. The Hochman Method gives students the tools they need to get their ideas onto the page. When students understand how sentences and paragraphs work, they spend less time struggling with where to start and more time focusing on what they want to say. It is similar to other disciplines we teach. Musicians practice scales. Artists learn techniques. Those foundations make creativity possible. Structured writing instruction does not box students in. The Olympics may be over for now, but we want to give the gold to Ms. Wojciechowski and her 1st graders at Bower Hill Elementary for their writing! She writes: "My first grade class completed the Olympic rings writing activity. After a brief mini lesson on the winter olympics, they used what they learned to answer the writing prompts on each ring."

"I'm obsessed with TWR; it has changed my teaching and given my students a love of writing! I purchased the book a month ago, and after 2 chapters in I signed up for the resources and now am working to roll this out in my school and even at the district level. The pictures are of how we used TWR to write our own mini books on George Washington. The students could not bet enough of that writing. We've also used TWR in math to help us analyze and understand shapes. My students love writing, and we're all learning so much in my first-grade classroom."
