During one of the worst losing streaks of my career, our team president walked into my office. Keli McGregor. One of the best men I've ever known. He could have come to vent. To question my decisions. To ask hard questions. Instead, he said: "Cut to the chase, Clint. What's next?" I looked him in the eye and gave him two words: "Shower well." The Colorado Rockies were struggling badly that year. Pregame preparation was solid. Scout meetings, early work, attention to detail. All of it was there. But at game time, the tires were flat. I told Keli: the game did everything it could to us today. We just couldn't meet its demands. Now it was time to reset. "Shower well" means exactly this: • Watch the frustration circle down the drain • Shampoo, rinse, repeat and get the grime of today completely off your mind • Walk out clean, go home, and actually rest Leave it at the ballpark. The game is over. There's nothing left to solve tonight. Keli nodded. Asked if he could share it with the whole organization. I said sure. And then it hit me. This isn't just for baseball. Bad day at the office. Grumpy boss. Missed deadline. Traffic on the way home. You can carry all of that through your front door. Or you can shower well. I've never seen a single problem get better because someone dragged it home with them. The reset is a discipline. Same as preparation. Same as showing up. Either we win. Or we learn. The only real loss? When you don't take a single thing out of a hard day. So tonight, whatever kind of day it was, shower well. Tomorrow is a new at-bat. What does your reset look like? I'd love to hear it.

Culture doesn’t change when coaches call out players. It changes when players hold each other accountable and say, “That’s not how we do things here.”

@xanbarksdale As more & more kids are not taught the art of bunting, thus not good & leading to misses, it's almost an automatic to back-pick on a missed bunt. Something our catchers work on a lot!

@LightningPitch As a high school coach who also attended, but spent most of this year at the main stage, 3 really hits. Every speaker who mentioned catch play (from HS to JUCO to Power 4) said exactly the same thing. Something I, unfortunately, have been bad at, but I am adding as a 'must-do'.

I'm a high school coach who spent most of his time in the youth baseball sessions during #ABCA2025. Why? Systemic changes to our baseball ecosystem need to happen. Here are some takeaways from ABCA and this year. 1. Parents are the customers. We need to spend more time educating parents. Yes, a December tournament is fun, but is it good for your player? 2. I had a coach question why my team only plays around 50 games and not 90 games. In a 90-game schedule for 12-year-olds, what precautions do you have in place to ensure young arms are not fatigued? Yep, none. Also, where is the practice time during the season to allow players to continue to develop? Games are just tests in the end. I'm a former teacher, and I never just gave my kids tests and expected them to succeed. 3. Monitor catch play. Encourage kids to be athletes and explore. Being an athletic thrower will solve 90% of your issues. 4. Multi-sport athletes are good to have. Yes, I delay the start of my season because I want to make sure they are ready after their winter sport, and I'm more than okay with that happening. Plus, they don't have to roll into a long baseball season after playing a long winter season. Kids need time to reset and be given time to learn before games. Lessons before a test! 5. I've been passionate about baseball, which has rubbed off on my kid. I regret not creating passions outside of baseball. I encourage my kid to play other sports, and it’s tough to think he only wants to play baseball at a young age. Whatever his choice is, I need to be okay with it and support him. We just need to play more pickup basketball and football games at home. Doing something else is such a great reset. We can improve the youth game! It can and will happen. There are enough of us to steer this ship in the right direction. As a HS coach I need to be vested in what goes on in youth baseball. Those young kids will be ones I hopefully get to coach when they are in HS.
