There was this day, in the year I rounded off my NYSC program. I met an old man at the bus stop while I was hustling back from a job interview. He wasn’t begging. He just sat there, shoes neatly placed beside him, holding a small nylon bag like it was something precious. Every bus that arrived, he stood up, walked forward, then quietly sat back down when it drove off. After a number of buses, I asked him where he was going. He said, "Anywhere. As long as it’s far." Sounding absolutely carefree. I asked why. He told me that day was his retirement day. Thirty-two years as a cleaner in a government office. No farewell. No send-off. No pension alert. Just a handshake and a "God bless you". The nylon bag held his work ID card, a pen, and the bread he couldn’t finish at lunch. I offered to pay his fare. He refused at first. Said someone else might need it more. I insisted. He finally agreed. We had a brief chat as I also tried to tell him my frustrations. I told him I was just coming from a job interview and how bad my life experience has been. He prayed briefly for me and asked me to help someone else one day when I could. When his bus came, he stood up straighter than before, smiled, and said, "At least someone noticed I existed." I watched the bus leave. Then I sat down with some hidden tears, because I realized how many people disappear quietly, without noise, without headlines, without anyone noticing. I wasn't buoyant. I was just a fresh graduate with only currency in hope. Each time I remember this man, I regret not taking his contact. I don't know what happened to him after then, whether he's alive or not, well or not. The pains and depression I saw in his eyes still haunt my heart till date. I really wish and hope he found the needed help wherever he is.
