Spousal sponsorship in Canada allows PRs/citizens to sponsor their spouse/partner; no minimum income, education, or language requirements. Until 2017, there was a condition: if the relationship was under 2 years and no children, the sponsored spouse had to live with the sponsor for 2 years post-PR; a safeguard to deter marriages of convenience. That was removed in 2017 to protect vulnerable individuals from being trapped in abusive relationships. Over the years, I’ve seen too many cases where things change almost immediately after PR is granted. One recent case: A young Canadian woman sponsors her husband. After he arrives, she gets pregnant. Within the first year, he abandons her, asks her to leave the house in the middle of a cold winter night. Walks away quoting “Do what you want to do” knowing his PR is secure This isn’t every case. But it’s not rare either. From what I’ve seen, the absence of conditional PR is being exploited in too many situations. Perhaps it’s time to revisit a form of conditional PR, with proper safeguards, to protect genuine relationships while deterring misuse.
