ok worth actually talking about apple, garmin, whoop etc don't measure VO2 max directly. they estimate it using things like rhr, hr recovery post exercise, age, sex, training loads. this model now thinks "low RHR = high vo2 max", which at the population level is directionally correct this is how joe schmo (me) can have the same reported VO2 max as a trained endurance athlete who has earned their low RHR from years of aerobic adaptation. the watch incorrectly applies a pop-level statistical relationship to a single, individual prediction it has been reported that VO2 max estimates correlate with real VO2 max at r2 = 0.60-0.75. meaning 25-40% of the variance is unexplained. yikes. this only gets worse as the person becomes more trained bc the model was trained on an unfit population in summary, never brag about your watch based VO2 max. because it's likely (very) wrong. just pay up and go to a lab. but in reality this number is not all that important for us desk jockeys my opinion, if you actually want to take endurance training seriously, I'd start by finding your lactate threshold, explained here (exceptionally well) by Gordo x.com/feelthebyrn1/s…

not for nothing but I think this group of team USA WBC were too nonchalant throughout the entire tournament. it felt to me that all of their passion was manufactured where as other teams it was palpable I don't think the American team got enough out of their captian Judge or coach DeRosa 1 WBC win out of 6 tournaments should not be acceptable for the red, white, and blue

> team USA beats mexico in group stages of WBC > manager before Italy game thinks they clinched spot to knockout round > they did not qualify yet > no one involved tells manager he's wrong??? > manages game like they have already clinched > lose to Italy > unlikely, but could get knocked out of the tournament > the hater in me is kinda hoping they do I know there are brilliant people working within USA baseball. BUT everyone associated with this staff should be fired for this. gross negligence. embarrassing to the players and the country

Here's a full summary of how Team USA embarrassed themselves last night in the World Baseball Classic.

incredible as always from @jacksondahl “Everything is possible. You have more potential than you can possibly know. It is not too late. You don't need more plans. You don't need more time. Tomorrow isn't real. You have what you need. You were built for this. Go make something that is easy for you to care about. Try it, experiment, launch and get feedback, feel the material in your hands and notice when aliveness arises within you. You don't need permission, you just need a little belief. Launch. Pull the thread and see what magical things you find. An infinite horizon awaits.”

dealing with tibialis pain from lots of activity. made real effort to land each step on mid/forefoot vs. heel. lower half feels springier & explosive. heel striking makes tibialis sole shock absorber where as forefoot strike distributes the load throughout lower leg. gr8 success

A friendly reminder to young players: if a scout refers to you as "long, lean, and projectable," it's not just so that you have good social media self-promotion material. Rather, it's just a nice way of saying you're skinny and need to put in more work in the gym and kitchen.

stop what you're doing and listen to @jacksondahl read @tobyshorin Body Futurism essay (or read it yourself, hardo) it’s an essay discussing that as our software utopias and institutions decompose, culture is reorganizing around the body. although this may be dangerous, full of grift, control, and hypochondria, it also opens the chance for a new way forward, built from sensing bodies and enlightened social forms. it's the best thing i've listened to (then read) this year jackson reading: open.spotify.com/episode/5dL7a1… essay: writing.tobyshorin.com/body-futurism/

Anyone else snap back into competitive mode when they play pop-a-shot? That's my guy, but I was not going to let him win. By any means. 🤣🤣

holy shit what an incredible moment. sports give you good stuff like this that you remember where you were, who you were with, and how it made you feel. this game was 88 minutes of pure tension and the relief of the first goal (set up by the 16 year old) was as intense as any fan moment I can remember. this second goal was pure jubilation. and that's me a 31 year old in the USA > 3000 miles away from the stadium now let's talk about the 16 year old playing for his childhood club with expectations that he's going to be one of the best players in the world. he gets subbed onto a 0-0 game with 20 minutes to go. immediately not only does he look ready for the moment but he's changing the game. the 88th minute cross that leads to the game winning goal. in the 96th minute he does this?? what a moment for him, his family, his coaches, his teachers the fans. back to school on monday btw hahaha. there's nothing like sports yall

yeah tbh i don't think there's much there that has any utility. I would've liked to have seen a microphone so I can journal how a set went or ask a question to an ai coach who can respond in the app also so much of strength training is form, having a camera component that tracks form should also be on the roadmap if not already

@35gcs its a cool idea. i think there's a general lack of established metrics in strength training compared to endurance. eg. vo2 max, training load/tss im curious to see what they could establish that's strength based from the watch hardware

cool idea - same hardware as apple watch (so far as I can tell) and building all software under the hood to orient only around strength training. focusing hard on sets, reps, velocity, and fatigue this SHOULD let fort specialize in things apple doesn’t attempt to do (exercise classification, rep velo, RPE estimations, workloads per muscle group) still guess it will still struggle with lower body based movements. especially when doing something like squats, machines, hip thrusts. even things like drop sets, med ball throws. can be solved by user input but if i'm paying for this + a sub i'm hoping this will figure this out love any attempt to shake up the wearable market. hard, honest work

Introducing Fort, a wearable that automatically tracks strength training. Strength training is one of the best things you can do for your health and longevity. It deserves better tools.
