I've been quietly building a Bible reading tracker — it's called Chapter by Chapter. Free, simple, works in your browser, no account needed. If you're trying to read more of the Bible and want something to mark your progress, this might help. Find it at bible-trackz.pages.dev

Got on a train this morning with a man who spent the journey screaming threats and spitting in the face of someone he took a dislike to for "looking at him". Deeply unpleasant.

@Civixplorer My favorite part of this graph is how it points out that English is no longer the national language of the UK.

Terrible orthography idea: In languages with a letter <ɛ>, just use <E> for its majuscule rather than the giant-lowercase epsilon. Then invent a closed <E> to use for capital <e>. You know, like how Turkish insists on having dot-consistency between capital and lowercase i/ı.

@haugejostein The building is blocked on other sides by walls, concrete barriers, etc. Perhaps you're not old enough to remember the Oklahoma City bombing 31 years ago. If you were, you'd understand what a truck bomb can do to a building, and then you'd understand why this is necessary.

I live right next to the US embassy in London. They built an actual moat around it. Who builds a moat around their embassy? Countries that do bad things and expect retaliation. Or countries who do diplomacy as if we’re in the Middle Ages.

@SrenK6 @TheCinesthetic Definitely agreed on Airplane and Top Secret. The Naked Gun...tried to watch that recently with my family, and throughout the whole thing it felt like the timing was off. I felt like I was having to make an effort to laugh.

@TheCinesthetic Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker has a filmography that is up there with the greatest. I mean Airplane, Top Secret and The Naked Gun are probably all in top-10 comedies of all time

Anyone dismissing comedy should take a look at Top Secret! (1984), where an entire sequence was performed backwards and then reversed in post, creating one of the most inventive gags ever put on screen.

@cremieuxrecueil Are there _any_ drug trials that actually compare to the prevailing drug rather than to a placebo? I had the impression that companies prefer testing vs. placebos because when they test vs. an existing drug they might lose.

I think what we have to do is clear: Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) needs to be treated as the standard of care for weight loss and it needs to be an active comparator in trials going forward. Everyone knows these drugs work, so we can't do inert placebos anymore.
Crémieux@cremieuxrecueil

This is not good: People have learned that GLP-1s are really effective, so if they're not losing weight, they know they're in the placebo group. So these people getting placebos are getting mad and leaving the trials.

@LemmySmackett I'll try that. I tried converting it to AZW3 or EPUB using Calibre, and that seemed to work, but after sending both of those converted books to my Kindle library, I can't get them to actually sync to the Kindle; they just get stuck. I'll see if this rename works.

@LemmySmackett If I download it, I don't get a PDF or EPUB; I get a .zip file, and inside that is basically a bunch of HTML and CSS files. I guess that's how it was authored. Maybe it somehow didn't get converted to Kindle format?
