A solar eclipse, viewed unsafely, can result in vision loss (solar retinopathy). But did you know an eclipse nearly 80 years ago (during WWII) inspired the lasers used in #ophthalmology? I had the chance to share that amazing story this week @uiowaeye morning rounds. 1/🧵

Look out for “SOPLA” in cases of unexplained vision loss👇 Congrats to Dr. Boyce, the diligent clinician scientist shown below, as esteemed first author. We had many lab meetings over several years to put this paper together. He sorted out the science…I balanced lenses 🤣

As learners, we walk in the shoes of those who have gone before. In doing so, we learn the way. Congrats to retina fellows Dr. Bhuyan and Dr. Jamshidi on tremendous growth @uiowaeye. They were thrilled to get custom colored FlyEase OR shoes for the next steps of their journey!

Very happy to share our study of human photoreceptor cell development finally out today in @jclinicalinvest! The cover image is an example of the sort of retinal organoids we used to model the inherited disease caused by NR2E3 variants. Check out those photoreceptors!!

ARVO’s annual meeting is not only the largest vision research gathering in the world — but also a yearly reminder that science advances through relationships as much as experiments. Great to see such progress in the field and to share smiles, enthusiasm, and ideas. #ARVO2024

Last year this time, I could never have imagined that at my next #ARVO2024 I’d be presenting my research on the podium, be an @ARVOinfo Science Communication Fellow #SciCommTF, & moderator! So much growth! So grateful to mentors and colleagues at @uiowaeye for the support!💛

@SRodsAndCones @uiowaeye @cataractsurgery @CUEyeCenter Congrats on the honor. Great to join this prestigious group of Heed fellows — but hard to top the gratitude of many patients who were blind and now see, all thanks to your tremendous efforts in fighting for health equity. Grateful to be a part of your journey. Onward!

Honored to have been selected as a Heed Fellow. Thank you to phenomenal mentors at @uiowaeye, especially @3Y3MD and @cataractsurgery. The extent of their impact on me (and many others) can't be captured in a tweet. Excited to continue the journey at @CUEyeCenter for VR fellowship

@honestlybilal @LeeGrace_05 @IowaMed Great case with “burn in your brain” images to remember. Placoid choroiditis has a narrow differential, including syphilis. Great job by @LeeGrace_05 and team. Grace is not only super smart but incredibly humble and kind — keep a look out for her on the residency trail!

Thanks @NEIDirector for the mention 🙏 Our team’s current AAV paradigm: 1) Human explants/organoids for tropism+transduction liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/hu… 2) Confirm tropism in animal models+ensure no toxicity liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/hu… 3) Assess inflammation to choose vector+route ⬇️

Limiting ocular inflammation is a challenge in gene therapy delivery. This #NEIfunded research finds AAV serotype and delivery routes mediate the degree of inflammation. @3Y3MD @ChoroidLab @StemCellsEh @IowaMed @uiowaeye @LiebertPub paper: bit.ly/3Nop6pZ

Have been a bit quiet on twitter as we've been getting to know this little guy - say hello to Avyaan Rao-Satija. And thanks to my lab (esp @smith_tracymae) for the amazing Single Cell Genomics Day quilt!

Start a brewery in the middle of the pandemic and make a special IPA to raise awareness and funds for vision research? Sure thing! Thanks to “courage” and the “power of the human spirit.” Thanks to @BlindButcherBru + @BackpocketBrew for supporting our mission to cure blindness!
