16-year-old child found dead at Feltham Young Offenders’ Institute after allegedly being beaten to a pulp in his cell. The teenager was discovered unresponsive in his cell on Monday 20 April at around 9:30pm. Staff called an ambulance and he was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead at 11:43pm. His girlfriend, who identified the body at West Middlesex Hospital through a glass window, said: “His body had been beaten to a pulp, he was covered in scuff marks and bruises.” The boy had a rare heart condition but his family say it is very rare to die from it and they do not believe this caused his death. They described him as a child who “had his whole life ahead of him” and planned to return to college. Feltham has repeatedly been described as the most violent young offenders’ institution in Britain. Scotland Yard is treating the death as unexpected and a full investigation is underway. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will also carry out an independent inquiry.
