I hope this photo is a watershed moment. Forced to carry on to the end of the race with a broken back. Collapsed & died after the finish line. RIP Gold Dancer. If you’re making money off this kind of suffering - how do you look at yourself in the mirror?

"A united, ambitious and confident Canada is once again taking risks to build a Canada that works for all," says Mark Carney in address to Liberal convention in Montreal. "Because you believe, like I believe that Canada is only strong when it works for everyone." #cdnpoli

We live on a planet with 1.3 billion habitable years left. We've had rockets for 69 of those years. In that time, the cost of reaching orbit dropped from $54,500 per kilogram to $2,720, and SpaceX is targeting under $100 with Starship. If they hit that number, getting to space becomes 545 times cheaper in a single lifetime. 329 orbital launches happened in 2025. Almost one a day. The space economy crossed $626 billion last year and should hit a trillion by 2034. SpaceX just filed for an IPO targeting a $2 trillion valuation, worth more than every airline on Earth combined. Starship, their fully reusable rocket (both stages fly back and land), can lift 150 tons to orbit. The entire International Space Station weighs 420 tons. Three flights could put the whole thing up there. The engineering side of this is solved. What remains is a survival problem. Researchers published a paper in Scientific Reports calculating the natural extinction rate for humans, how often we'd get wiped out by asteroid strikes, supervolcanoes, the stuff we can't control. Less than a 1-in-14,000 chance in any given year. At that rate, we'd survive millions of years, more than enough to spread across the solar system. Toby Ord, a philosopher at Oxford who spent a decade studying how civilizations end, puts the odds of a civilization-ending catastrophe before 2100 at 1-in-6. The threats aren't from space. Nuclear war. Viruses engineered in labs that could spread before anyone understands what hit them. AI systems are smart enough to act on goals we never gave them. All things we built ourselves. A 2017 NASA paper made this case: we have a roughly 50-year window to lock in spacefaring infrastructure before resources run thin and energy costs make a restart nearly impossible. We're 9 years into that window. Given enough time, the math takes this to 100%. The only question that matters is whether we make it through the next few decades without blowing our shot.

☀️ Good morning Canada. Welcome to my misinformation edition 🇨🇦 Canada politics Today’s theme: how misinformation spreads through influencer networks and social media. • A viral claim from commentator Marc Nixon cited a “poll” from Maple Polling claiming Mark Carney had 77.1% negative approval. When questioned and compared with legitimate polling data, Maple Polling deleted the tweet. The misinformation had already reached ~19K impressions. • A second viral claim alleged Carney was booed on a jumbotron clip at a sports event. The claim was circulated by accounts including Tracy Wilson and echoed by others. The accompanying TSN video clip contains no audible booing. • Claims that Canada is planning to join the European Union also circulated online. While commentator Mario Zelaya framed this as a serious Liberal proposal, there is no government policy or negotiation suggesting Canada could or would join the European Union. • Another viral post suggested Bill C‑9 (Canada) could criminalize passages from the Bible. In reality, the bill concerns judicial discipline procedures and does not regulate religious speech. • Jasmine Laine claimed Carney ignored French speakers until campaigning in Terrebonne. Yet Carney’s public engagements in Quebec pre-date that event. 📉 Pattern: Unverified claims → viral posts → impressions accumulate → corrections rarely travel as far. This is just in the last week. Pluralistic democracies depend on evidence-based debate, not viral narratives. You have coffee ☕️, I’ll pour myself a glass of wine 🍷 #GoodMorning #Canada #cdnpoli #MediaLiteracy #Misinformation

@AaronGunn Are you advocating we nationalize our oil industry? Because private companies will always maximize their profits based on the global market, which is exactly what they're doing.

Canada has the 4th-largest oil reserves on the planet. We should not have $2-per-litre gas. Canada's political leaders need to stop making excuses and start building. We need to build pipelines. We need to build refineries. And we need an energy policy that actually puts Canada and Canadians first! 🇨🇦

Someone could go to school for 4 years and study aerospace engineering, then get a PhD with a dissertation related to orbital mechanics, and some instagram influencer who watched a youtube video will be like "actually that guy is wrong" on a topic related to space travel and people will believe them. I'm not sure how we got here, but I hope we go back to a society where credibility is earned with rigorous training in the associated field, not by a popularity contest.

“Instead of Iran charging $2M/vessel going through the Strait, the U.S. will charge a $2M escort fee for every vessel, which is about $9B a month or $100B in revenue.” “We will waive that fee for any country that participates in the coalition to open up the Strait.” BRILLIANT!!

@u_r_a_dickhead If Canada had its own oil industry, we could control the price/profits etc. But we chose to not have an oil industry so we are the mercy of international markets. BTW, you followed 54 people and have 52 followers, so I am guessing you are low info or a bot?

Let me walk you through what happened one hour before Trump announced the five day moratorium on Iran strikes. $1.5 billion in notional S&P E-mini futures contracts. Four to six times normal activity. One hour before the announcement. Simultaneously, $192 million in crude oil futures purchased at the same time. They made between $300 and $400 million dollars off those trades. Trump claimed he spoke to an Iranian official to negotiate the moratorium. The Iranians said that person doesn't exist and the conversation never happened. This is not the first time. It has happened multiple times. He says something. The trade goes on. He says another thing. The market moves. But whatever you call it — they are laughing at you and they are laughing at me while they do it. Hunter Biden sold a painting and Washington lost its mind. These people are making hundreds upon hundreds of millions of dollars trading on information that only exists inside the most powerful office in the world. I think we are dramatically underreporting how much money is actually being made here. This isn't politics anymore. This is a financial operation running out of the White House.

I lived in France for six years as a child, where high-speed trains are a common way to travel. Riding them was a great experience! They made it easy to move quickly between major cities without the stress of traffic or the discomfort of long car rides. One reason many Canadians don’t use trains today is that they aren’t fast enough, introducing high-speed rail could help address that issue.
