𝗪𝗵𝘆 Crypto payments are not feassible for most African Markets.
In powerhouses like Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, you can go fully cashless: every transaction, down to the cent, via digital payments. Mobile money penetration hits >86.6% in Kenya thanks to MPESA and drives >51% of African adults using digital tools overall. These countries embraced fintech early, making them ripe for crypto integration. This is also be reflected by the total value received in sub-saharan Africa with the highest volumes of crypto received in countries with high digital payment adoption. (Excerpt from chainalysis)
Contrast that with cash-dominant economies like Uganda, Tanzania, and Ghana. Here, digital payments often come with "include withdrawal fees" caveats, limiting seamless use. Mobile money exists but cash reigns SUPREME. The main use case for mobile money is remittances and transfer payments whose recipients then convert it for cash via OTC desks (see image) for real-world use.
Why is digital payment adoption low in Uganda and Tanzania?
As a Ugandan, I confidently say it's due to low trust: fear that payers might claim "mistaken payment" and reverse it, doubts about government guarantees to secure the payment, and concerns over telecoms securing your funds. We have solid digital infrastructure, but in a trust-based society, human-level confidence is the missing piece.
Crypto payment adoption (beyond remittances) needs a foundation of real-world digital payment adoption to take off. Without robust trust guarantees from governments and telecom companies, digital payment adoption drops and so does crypto payment adoption.
Bottom line: Crypto payments could supercharge digital payments in cash economies, but it must build on (or solve) these human trust hurdles first. Crypto might help bridge remittances to digital payments, but we're not there yet.

@veggie_eric You can pick up a thing or two. The more you practice, the more you learn.

@vxunderground Gemini, Claude and Deepseek all seem to be down too (via Cursor at least)... OpenAI seems like it's still working

🚀 Kicking Off My Web3 Learning Journey Series!
I've received many questions about how I transitioned into Web3 Security. So, I’ve decided to share my exact learning journey, step by step.
This isn’t meant to be the ultimate guide. There are plenty of great resources out there (many probably better). But this is what genuinely worked for me, and I hope it’ll help in your own journey.
