When I first got into social, I was way too precious with the work. Protect the brand at all costs. Be serious. Over-strategize. Don’t just try. Somewhere along the way my perspective change. Now I’m pretty firm that overthinking is one of the most paralyzing things a team can do in social today. The best teams sit in the middle, but in a middle that that's not overly precious. They protect and understand the brand, but they also live inside internet culture. They know it's not about engagement for engagement sake, but that showing up in fun and human ways matters. At the end of the day, the internet is often an escape. If you’re too precious with your presence, it's hard to play in this space in a way that people enjoy today.
