The Online Safety Act was promised as domestic legislation to protect children from online harms. In reality, its regulator (Ofcom) has demonstrated sinister extraterritorial ambitions that now affect US tech companies and the First Amendment rights of American citizens.
Ofcom has fined US messaging platform 4chan £520,000 (plus £800 per day), claiming the company failed to comply with the Act’s risk assessment duty, its illegal content safety duty, and its children’s safety duties.
The Online Safety Act is a threat to free speech.
