Welcome to Country goes back thousands of years. It is a profound cultural ritual performed by elders to welcome visitors to traditional lands. It acts as spiritual permission and guarantees safe passage. I experienced it in 1972 in the Gibson Desert. So wash your your mouth out!

@4mambo There was no welcome ceremonies in central Australia 50 years ago. The first was in Nimbin in 1973, the second was in WA in 1976. They did not become commonplace until the 90's. You are lying Geoff.

Gay, you are being welcomed to land to which aboriginal people have a deep cultural connection. I first experienced this 50 years ago from traditional owners in central Australia. It was a ceremony of respect. It has nothing to do with being welcomed to Australia. She knows that!

When did any elected government make a formal decision to almost double Australia's immigration intake, to fly three flags rather than one on all government buildings, or to begin all civic events with acknowledgments of "country"? The latest example of officialdom's tendency to push change-by-stealth is the sudden push to rename the Tasmanian federal electorate of Franklin, a federation seat, so-called after an early governor, later the famed-if-ill-starred Arctic explorer, after the Aboriginal warrior Tongerlongeter, whose many casualties included women and children. Tony Burke and the citizenship giveaway - just like Oprah handing out prizes. Last year it was a full scale push: Burke travelling the country dishing out citizenships right before the election. Now reports show councils being urged to ramp up ceremonies, with waiting lists ballooning and events tripling in key areas like Liverpool and Cumberland. Independent MP Rod Roberts called it “minting new voters.” New citizens get benefits and may feel obliged to support the government that fast-tracked them. With record migration numbers, this raises serious questions about using the citizenship process for political advantage instead of proper integration. Citizenship should be an honour based on commitment to Australia - not a numbers game for votes. What are your thoughts?

The thing is, she is an embarrassment. Has been all along. Until recently, only Sky After Dark treated her seriously. One Nation’s rise had nothing to do with her - it was Liberal Party implosion. The lift this gave ON caused more people to look at her - and they don’t like it.
