My first thought: someone was robbing the place. I pulled over, grabbed my phone, and started walking closer. The figure moved onto Mrs. Patton’s property — an 81-year-old widow who lost her husband recently. That’s when I realized the “intruder” was Gerald. He was sprinkling rock salt on her icy front steps. Carefully. Methodically. Making sure she wouldn’t slip in the morning. Then he wiped down her handrail, cleared her mailbox, and left a bag of hot homemade food by the front door. He had no idea anyone was watching. When I stepped into the light, he nearly jumped out of his skin. I asked him how long he’d been doing this. “Since the funeral,” he said quietly. Turns out he’d noticed Mrs. Patton struggling after her husband died. The dark house. The untouched mailbox. The difficulty pulling trash bins back up the driveway.
