In Chapter 1179, we see Imu transforming in the castle. In the new chapter, Imu isn't fully visible in the Joyboy scene. And the structure in the flashback scene could really fit with Vearth.
Perhaps that's why he shrouds his body in darkness, because he doesn't want his followers to see him like that.

Reminds me of Vegapunk's words about the fact that he didn't know who was right or wrong back then.
I believe that Imu and Joyboy had a common enemy and that they talked about it because the world was in chaos back then: "The sun spread fires of war".
Perhaps Joyboy and Imu grew up under extremely difficult conditions; perhaps the king at the time was Davy Jones, whom they both ultimately defeated?

Imu creates a insane large omen, covers his weapon (and himself) with it and it change to a gigantic flail.
Later he use Omen again and the weapon change to a black blade, called Nemesis.
