@NitroSpidey A world premiere or festival debut date is what’s listed because it’s easy to stay consistent with it. The issue is that a “offical release” is much more nebulous and many films won’t have a clear cut answer to what would fit for it.

I don’t understand why festival release dates are sometimes considered the official release date/year because like… no? That’s not when everyone was able to officially see it? That’s not what all the promo was for? It’s weird.

@chewybuddy @TheEricGoldman @letterboxd Ok, and how are qualifying runs handled? What about movies that are more of a rotating series of one of showings in different areas? What about films that have international DVD/digital sales before an official US release?

HUGE pet peeve of mine. Wikipedia and other sites do this too. A movie playing a one-off film fest screening is not when it opened!! Obsession is a 2026 movie and I won’t accept these internet lies! (But seriously, can we tweak this, @letterboxd?)
Quinn@QuinnHesters

Hate how Letterboxd counts festivals as when a movie released because I feel like it’s trying to gaslight me into thinking Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die and Obsession are 2025 movies because twenty people or whatever saw them last year.

@sharintaint @Darren_Mooney My fear is that it will be the rise of AI slop and the decline of auteur and artist driven cinema.

@Darren_Mooney 2010s was the culmination of cultural forces. 2020s is the hangover. Somewhere in the background we're building up to the next movement which should start becoming clearer in 3-5 years.

@Darren_Mooney I want to imagine this, but I can’t imagine us reaching an analogue to the level of artistic freedom of the 70’s or New Hollywood in a hypothetical 2030’s of Hollywood.

@wannabfisherman The counter is that there’s so many movies playing that there isn’t time to see every movie ever. There’s always films I mean to see in theaters, but I can only see so many a week and sometimes the opportunity doesn’t present itself.

@MetaReflexive I think the issue is that the main ones are done for award season purposes, so there’s not going to be as much of a rush for actors to try and go for these roundtables when their impact will be dulled by months of films coming out since then.

@thebitchinthetv Well, it’s also a “Twitter inherently promotes spineless and stupid discourse to get more interaction out of people” thing.

@jamesxhorror @arcanaraccoon Or you can look at the many problematic ways the horror genre has represented women (be it intentional hatred, or well intended but flawed attempts at representation), and it’s nowhere near as simple to say that the genre just represents the good parts of our beliefs.

@jamesxhorror @arcanaraccoon I would say that horror would moreso represent the fears and anxieties of the author/creator, and it can manifest in many of the things you say, but then you look at the shadow Ed Gein casts over horror or how much of Lovercraftian horror comes from Lovecraft’s fears and hatred.

@jamesxhorror I understand what you mean, but a lot of the genre was built on these problematic tropes and stereotypes, and since conservative values lean heavily on nostalgia, they won’t see modern attempts to escape the shadows of past flaws as harming their rose tinted view of the genre.

@kijuler When you get to the biggest cities and the top IMAX’s, prices can get to a lot more than $10.

@DespairNem I think it’s better to look at this as a sign of a growing and maturing cinematic taste rather than a specific gripe agaisnt your past self. Every film fan has some opinions they look back as dumb or embarrassing, but it’s better to look at the growth than the older embarrassment

@DespairNem If I was to guess, you just weren’t on its wavelength on your initial viewing, and now that you know what you should be expecting and feeling, you’re better able to appreciate it.

@DespairNem It depends on the book and what’s being talked about. I wouldn’t want people to stop hating on Robert Moses despite nobody ever actually reading The Power Broker and only knowing the info second hand because yeah, Robert Moses definitely deserves that hate.

@effoff1988 @Ugly1Moon1 I’d also note that IMDB is not a reliable source for information about future productions since it can be user edited. Also, they mispelled “confirms” as “conforms” though given the unreliability, I suppose it’s closer to say it’s conforming to the OP than confirming anything.

@Ugly1Moon1 Kjersti, your obsession with cyber harassing me & defaming Blake Lively, will land you in lifelong legal debt. Using an AI photo of someone, with cleaerintent to cause emotional, reputational & economic harm, will ALSO cost you in court. P.S. Netflix dgaf about your “message”.

(1/3) I read an early draft of PUMPING BLACK and if done well, these could be career redefining villainous roles for Jonathan Bailey & Natalie Portman. Shades of Black Swan, Whiplash, The Substance & Challengers. Editing (cycling) & cinematography (European vistas) will be key.

@fender_belly That’s not to say that there aren’t micro budget dramas, but the kind of micro budget drama films made don’t have star power and are usually aiming for the arthouse/indie crowd so aren’t often designed or expected to be crowd pleasers.

@fender_belly The issue is that horror can be sold on cheap spectacle and doesn’t need name actors, while dramas and legal thrillers will generally need some star power to get attention, so will generally need a bigger budget.

@prestuvius @Bettie_Bondage @davidehrlich If you’re a critic, you want to ensure your review is published when it’s the most relevant, which is when the embargo ends after the premiere gala ends. So they would want to see it at a press screening so their reviews get read so they can keep being able to go to festivals.

@628ogerda @Bettie_Bondage @davidehrlich If you're a critic seeing a brand new movie for the first time, I'd think you would want to see it with a full audience rather than a roomful of a few dozen critics.

Fjord: Sebastian Stan & Renate Reinsve move their religiously conservative family to ultra-progressive Norway, where they're immediately accused of abusing their kids. less tense than usual for Cristian Mungiu, but much sadder. p good! my #cannes review: indiewire.com/criticism/movi…
