I don’t know if you don’t understand my original tweet or you’re being weasely. This is like an “But I like waffles” response and had nothing to do with the topic. Of course, they’re humans with the same value as anyone else. Same for the Germans in Germany in WWII. But the people who scream at Israel for caring at all about being murdered are not people who consider the Israelis to be human being of comparable value (same as the Nazis didn’t), and that’s the problem.

@Joelmpetlin University campuses have a long history of protests and in most cases those were righteous while making some folks uncomfortable. Those guilty of harassment deserve punishment but most protesters do not fall in the bucket . I assume you know that

University of Michigan Professor Derek Peterson changed his approved speech at the commencement to hijack the podium for his divisive politics. He abused the trust of the University. There must be consequences.

Peterson was asked by the university to give congratulatory remarks to the graduates. He submitted his remarks in advance for approval. He then deviated from those remarks to praise students responsible for a wave of antisemitism at his university, including the repeated harassment of a Jewish trustee. But of course, he thinks that he is now the victim and martyr, because he is rightfully facing severe criticism for his clear misbehavior.

Democrats are making a big mistake going down the anti-Israel foreign policy road, and it will backfire. Our relationship with Israel is not a charity case - it's mutually beneficial (and every liberal dem who has ever worked in national security knows this btw). Terror plots on U.S. soil are often thwarted thanks to intelligence from Israel, but that's just one example of the advantages of the relationship. Those who argue forget why the U.S. cultivates relationships with democracies around the world and why that's central to our foreign policy. It's because WE benefit from that friendship, whether it's through trade, security, or shared values. And that benefit is a force multiplier because it works not just for own safety but toward global stability. (Read more on democratic peace theory.) Only one group of people wins when they see calls to undermine the relationship with Israel: terrorist groups. They are listening and to them, they hear it as a message of encouragement. That doesn't just threaten Israel and our interests in the region, but it threatens us here as well. Terrorist groups are not just after Israel; they are after the West and all its values. Bending to them is the worst thing we can do. So, knowing this, my question to my Democratic friends is - why on earth would anyone give an inch to terrorist groups and extremists? You are about to lose so many national security experts because of this view. Does that not signal something wrong?

This statement from @UMichPresGrasso misses the mark. There needs to be real accountability for someone who deviated from their “approved remarks”. Put him on leave without pay, strip him of administrative support or research assistants, cut his expense budget, among others. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and they have a right to express it, but the university has the right to set the time, manner, and place.
