Throughout Shuffle's journey, we've dodged a total of 7 bullets (that we know of).
When I say a bullet, I mean something which could've had a huge impact on our trajectory if things had gone slightly differently. I'll give you an example below:
About 3 months after our launch, we chanced upon a community which we meshed incredibly well with in an Asian market. There was a figurehead who loved what we were doing and considered us a good alternative to the other casinos that were prominent at the time; he very quickly brought his entire group with him, with a good mix of incredibly friendly players. As a new casino, we'd hit the jackpot.
1 week in to our partnership, Shuffle released Keno. 2 days later, our CTO wakes up in the middle of the night and decided to check our stats on a whim - he saw that we were getting smashed on the casino consistently, at an alarming rate. Coincidentally, I'd decided that I wanted a good sleep that night and had set my phone to silent; I woke up to my cofounder banging on my front door at 3am.
We lost about 30% of our bankroll that night, on what turned out to be a Keno payout being 1.5x instead of the 1.1x it should've been. A player in this new community had seen that we'd made a mistake on the payout, and proceeded to tell everyone in the group, who naturally started playing Keno in waves. The biggest concern for me wasn't the money, it was potentially scaring off this community that we'd just onboarded. To cut a long story short, we ended up working closely with the head of the group, and that community has continued with us as a pivotal part of our growth.
I say this to demonstrate the fact that luck has played an incredibly important role in us being where we are today. If our CTO had woken up 15 minutes later, or had decided not to check our charts when he did, I don't really know where we'd be. When I see new casinos popping up doing similar or identical things to what we do, all I can think of is those bullets we dodged and wonder how other teams would react in similar situations, or whether they'll even be lucky enough to dodge them in the same way we did.
This should by no means discredit the hard work our team puts in behind the scenes; at a rough estimate, I'd say it's 90% our actions and 10% luck that got us here - the harder and smarter we work, the more we reduce our reliance on luck.
