I'm still laughing that people on this website were dooming so hard that they called Pokemon Champions "Predatory" 300,000 VP in Season 1 and I never spent a Dime!

@NailsOU @JacobSkraw Formats will evolve for as long as they have tournaments that people want to win. I’d rather the ebbs and flows come from innovative players than up top saying “how do things change if now this is allowed?”

@JacobSkraw i think stale formats are boring and lame, fresh formats are awesome and fun and cool. basically what donald said, make small tweaks every monthish that nudge the metagame in a direction. there's a ton of rippling consequences without breaking anything usually. 4 good mons/month.

We’ve been begging for longer formats for years now and the new wave wants the format to rotate every month. Wild disparity

I feel like most mechanics really encourage just playing, win or lose, which is huge. It’s so easy to tilt or walk away and stop practicing after a few losses, but thinking “hey, I’m still earning VP and chipping away at the battle pass” could be enough to keep you in it

While the new “rental” system in champions means you can’t try teams out for free, which does slightly increase barrier to entry, I do like that having to earn back your VP encourages players to stick with a team long enough to learn its lines and tools and build experience.

@GladiusRegis5 @lthlnkso *Survive long enough to transmit. Once it proliferates it doesn’t care what happens to you after. If it spreads after a week and you die from the effects 3 weeks later, it could have 100% mortality and still be a pandemic

@lthlnkso If a virus kills 40% of its hosts, it is not a candidate for a pandemic. Viruses need their hosts to survive in order to spread widely.

I never realized that move info tells you the type effectiveness against the entire other team in Pokemon Champions. You can see flare blitz here is super effective against venusaur, resisted by charizard and garchomp, and neutral against everything else.

@GlitchxCity Genuine question: how does one recognize AI gen’d music? I listened to the track that started this discourse before hearing it was AI, and thought it was pretty good. I’m an experienced musician and nothing seemed obviously “off” to me the way visual genAI does. What’s the tell?

Could always use more VGM remixers and music producers in the Pokémon Community, specifically ones that don't generate AI music.

I've tried to provide some examples of how these could directly affect damage types using actual categories from the game, as well as two others taken from D&D. They would deal an extra damage or less damage depending on the move's damage category and the opponent's type

This makes me think that something that could be really interesting, and something I think Pokémon could explore further, is the properties of moves, like sound, biting, punching, and so on. The only mechanic that really takes advantage of this is Pokémon’s abilities, but +

@Gagaegral I see a lot of “this would be too much to keep track of” but we already have niche things like “sound moves bypass substitute.” Could definitely be neat if applied similarly to freeze dry, where not all moves are categorized like this but specific ones get added complexity

@nrmtenjoyer It doesn’t conflict imo, I think the idea was that you would change your team around often- as you progress and find better mons. Taking your favorite little guy all the way to the end wasn’t the point. Exception being the starters, who scale well but are rare

@6squirrels1 Even back then you were encouraged to use any pokemon you wanted and the shallow movepools made it so you could, so making so many Pokemon shit on purpose just kinda conflicts with that? When the solution to letting them have a little niche was right there the whole time

That is not self balancing, that just means the pokemon that did get stab that synergized with their best attacking stat were going to be waaaaaay better than anything else. It made every other Pokémon way worse than they ever needed to be
ruru🌙@rankomon

STAB moves that actually synergize with the best attacking stat used to be rare on purpose back in the day. It was self balancing in way that the maximum damage a 'mon could do was limited. Damage multipliers nowadays make everyone very easily 1-2 shot with boosted stab moves

@45mice The main reason I left comp MtG is bc I was tired of buying new cards to keep up. I love(d) VGC because there was no extra $; I had the game already so in order to compete I just had to play it. I get they’re a business/other esports do it, but it’s still a disappointing change

My thoughts on the Champions discourse - I expected some microtransactions. We’ve been lucky with only a game + DLC for years. Tcg gets big expensive meta shifts every 3 months. Most competitive esports have a way for the game to continue to make money, long as it’s reasonable.

@scruffycitytv @duck_gk @alsonamedjosh Is that not, in a way, what is already happening? Parent company changes the game in a way to benefit themselves and not the current player base. The only difference is Hasbro didn’t sell and let someone else do it

@duck_gk @alsonamedjosh Everyone is assuming wizards would be sold to someone who would keep it like normal magic. For all we know it gets turned into Pokemon style cards by the new owners to attract the younger generation 😂

Everyone's talking about how Universes Beyond is hurting Magic, but my personal opinion is that the Modern Horizons sets have fundamentally changed the game for the worse far more than all the UB sets combined.

@RoyalXIII @Pokemon @gamestop Had work so I went to GameStop on my lunch break. Got there at noon, two hours after they opened. Guy said “yeah we’re all out, we got them in on Wednesday so we just started handing them out then. And TCG this morning cleared whatever was left.”

Hey @Pokemon @gamestop can we get confirmation if there’ll be more codes or a better way to get them in the US? Limiting the amount of code cards, the inability to print out the code via receipt, and dropping this on a new TCG day which has HIGH scalpers isn’t right

Genuine Curious Question: Has anyone found success in VGC team building with the aid of various “substances”? I know musicians and artists do it. So surely someone had tried right?
