Christopher Hitchens once observed that identity politics had become the refuge of “the most dense and boring and selfish,” those who saw in it their big chance. The description fits the present performance rather well. It requires neither curiosity nor courage to repeat fashionable accusations while ignoring the realities of crime and policing. People who build reputations on this sort of agitation rarely improve the communities they claim to defend. Race-baiting corrodes trust, poisons public debate, and trains citizens to see one another primarily as members of rival racial blocs. It is a cynical trade, and it leaves society poorer, more divided, and less capable of confronting real problems.
